Chess

Post by araknoid »

I think I've seen two Origami chess sets around. Makes me wonder if there are any others, and CPs or diagrams of course.

Chess is such a wonderful subject so open to variations.

There are quite a few 1-piece chessboards, and four chess sets I know of.

The full sets are by Joseph Wu (his website), Stephen O'Hanlon (his website), John Montroll (Origami Inside Out), and Marc Kirschenbaum (PCOC Play - http://db.origami.com/book_contents.asp?BookID=2247).

John Montroll has an excellent chessboard in Origami Inside Out. Marc Kirschenbaum has two seamless chess boards (each square is crease-free), an amazing 4-piece one (at Dr. O'Hanlon's site, fishgoth.com) and a[n impossible] 1-piece one you can find on origami.com. Sy Chen has a checkerboard in OUSA 2001. Steven Casey has [an unpublished as far as I know] 1-piece checkerboard that is seamless and I heard uses twist folds. Martin Wall, Max Hulme, etc. made chess boards long ago, there's a BOS booklet of them--haven't seen it though.

Thanks! Yes, I designed it myself. Each piece is made from a single square of homemade foil while the board is from 4 squares.

Does anyone hold the diagrams of Hans Birkeland's 4-piece chessboard? It's been on his website but now the site has gone in the sink...

I'm interested in it because I just compiled a mini-database about different chequered patterns which misses a few details.

Thanks in advance!

Hans Birkeland's homepage is now available here:
http://www.hansbirkeland.150m.com/

(unfortunately with loads of advertising that sometimes hinders the browsing of the website...)
So long and keep folding ^_^

Danke sehr!

Seems like Google didn't catch it yet... The pop-up ads are really annoying indeed, but at least I got the diagrams now.

Next question: can anyone provide me with information about the boards published in the BOS booklet #7 and CDO's QQM 26? :D My basic interest is in the models which use squares and are at least 4x4. Is Max Hulme's 8x8 (in BOS booklet #7) fuzzy or clean face?

There are three chessboards by Max Hulme in that booklet: the first is made from four sheets, the second from one sheet with cuts, the third from one sheet without cuts. All three are what you'd call "fuzzy".
