Hi I am new to the forums and have been folding since around 3rd grade on/off. About 6 years ago I started folding harder models but I still have not folded anything original yet.

Anyways, I am trying to find an existing diagram (free or in any available book) for a detailed human hand or hands in a handshake grasp.

If unavailable, does anyone have any thoughts or tips on a starting point for folding this on my own?

Hands are (in my opinion) the most expressive parts of the human body. Painting hands, drawing hands are extremely difficult. Folding them is even harder! Look to none other than our master Eric Joisel. He has been a great contributor to the human form in the origami world. I suggest looking at his crease patterns to see how he folds the base of his hands. They are relatively easy to fold, but hard to shape them realistically. Good luck on this endeavor!

Jeremy Shafer - Origami to Astonish and Amuse.

I think jeremys book is pretty good. (but i like the surfer better then the hand)

In my opinion, the best model that helps practicing shaping hands is Cu' Kim Ngoc's handbone model : http://origami.artists.free.fr/CuKimNgo ... ndbone.htm
It's a CP only, but it's really simple to solve anyway. Once you collapse the model, just spread the fingers apart and flatten everything. Then, you can shape it to your heart's content. This is the method that you usually do in more advanced models I believe (at least, that's what I do). Also, this method does not depend on the structure of the hand. For example, you can try it on Jun Maekawa's devil or even on Shafer's models. Hope this helped

Not the best of diagrams, but they're workable.

One of the best hand sequences is the one for Hojyo Takashi's Buddha, it also includes palms.

Here's a partial CP for a hand I'm working on:



It has an opposable thumb.

My attempt at Jared's Hand; from cp. I folded it from a square and got 6 fingers, one of which was turned into the palm. The green at the back shows starting size paper.
And yes, the thumb can be positioned into any position, even tip-touching the pinkie.
Jared, I'm curious to see the right way of folding it.

Last month I was just start studing on an origami hand for a project I have have in back of my drawer for many years...
And now I see this post

This was my starting point. I like its back, but not the finger proprotions and the palm is to full of folds.




I'll surely take some hints from the samples you have posted here.

thats a wonderful hand OrigamiGianluca! i kinda like the bunches of folds on the palm..kinda artsitic. even has sleeves from a shirt, AND sleeve for a jacket :D what is attached to it?

My hand comes from a very simple box pleating (and that's why the fingers heve the same leght)
The model in the photos is a stand alone hand, and I've used the extra paper wrapping it around making it to appear just like sleeves.
But I think this would be quite impossible to do on a more complex model.
