Hi, my name is Gerardo, I administrate an open creators' blog called Neorigami and, with the help of the Origami Shop and various origamists (specially Ekaterina Lukasheva, Aurèle Duda, and Hoàng Tiến Quyết), I have designed this challenge for all of you.

PARTICIPATING FORUMS

DETAILS
TOPIC: Models that are useful (practical) as well as astonishing
SUBMITION DATES: From now till March 30th
JUDGING AND VOTING DATES: From April 1st to the 15th

CONDITIONS:
-Only original models are allowed, created specifically for this challenge.
-Papers of all forms and sizes are allowed.
-Using more than one paper for one model is allowed.
-Presenting more than one model is allowed (keep on reading for details).
-Cutting ISN'T allowed.
-Pasting ISN'T allowed.

JUDGING AND VOTING CRITERIA:
-level of usefulness: How helpful is it and how well does it serve its purpose?
-astonishment factor: how amazing is it to see origami accomplishing this task?

PRIZES
-From the judging system: "Advanced Origami" with a personal dedication from the author Didier Boursin sent to anywhere in the world (courtesy of Didier Boursin himself)
-From the voting system: One of the following two options (courtesy of the Origami Shop)...

(A) One of the books by Nicolas Terry with a personal dedication + paper + free shipping fees for anywhere in the world. The postage will be economic postage (1 to 6 weeks mainly 3-4 weeks), except for South America, Africa, China, Oceania and some other small countries , in which case priority postage will be used.

OR (B) 50 € (Euros) discount on any order in the Origami Shop (the person should pay the shipping fees using this 50 €).

JUDGES

-ÁNGEL ECIJA: Spanish creator of many models, including the origami whistle that actually makes sound when blown! This model motivated this challenge since we wished to see more useful models of this level of creativity.
-DIDIER BOURSIN: French folder, author of many origami books, including two books about useful models: "Pliages et utiles" and "Pliages decoratifs et utiles"
-LARRY HART: English creator of many models, many of the useful type, including his very popular picture frame.

SUBMITIONS
-Submit your model or models to ONLY one of the six forums.
-Embed as many pictures of your model, or each of your models, as you need here as a reply to this topic. Every picture must have a width of 640 px max., if not they can't be presented in The Origami Forum. (You are welcome to post your model and upload the pictures in Neorigami in order to embed the pictures here afterwards. It's not mandatory to post the model in Neorigami).
-Embed also videos if it's important to see the model in action.
-Include a name of the model.
-Explain the model, mentioning number of papers besides their original form and size, and why do you think the model should win.
-DO NOT upload diagrams nor crease patterns.
-I will be presenting here in this forum the participating models from the other five forums.
-Pliages de Papier will upload one or more of the pictures of your model to its gallery of the challenge. By submitting your model you are agreeing to this.

JUDGING SYSTEM
-Each judge will personally choose their five favorite models based on the judging criteria presented here.
-They will organize the five models from their #1 choice to their #5, declaring their arguments for each choice.
-Five points will be awarded to each #1 choice, four to each #2, three to #3 and so on.
-The points will be added together being the winner the model with the most points.
-If there's a tie between two or more models, the judges will go to a second round, deciding the winning model between ONLY the ones that had tied.
-Judges have the right to ask the participants questions regarding the models, ask to show more pictures of the model from particular angles or even to make a video of the model in action in order to choose their favorite models.
-Each model competes separately even if two or more are from the same participant.
-In that case, each judge may ONLY select one of the models from the same participant, among his favorite five.
-Judges may communicate directly through one of the forums or may send their comments to me by email for me to post them here.

VOTING SYSTEM
-You may vote ONLY if you are participating in the challenge with one or more models.
-Please vote ONLY in the very same forum were you submitted their model or models.
-You get to vote for ONLY one model.
-You are voting for the models and not for the participants. If a participant presents more than one model, each model gets independent votes.
-All votes will be posted publicly, arguing why do you consider that the particular model fulfill the challenge's criteria.
-After adding up the votes from all six forums, the model with more votes win.
-Voters have the right to ask the participants questions regarding the models, ask to show more pictures of the model from particular angles or even to make a video of the model in action in order to decide their vote wisely.
-In case one model is the winner of both the judging and voting systems, the prize of the voting system will be awarded to the model with the second most votes.

EXTRA INFORMATION
-Other judges may be invited to participate and there may be other prizes as well. In any of these two cases, the rules will be adapted accordingly.

Just for clarification, you can only vote on the models that were submitted on the forum you posted? Or is there going to be a list of all submitted models to choose from?

Remember that astonishing is part of the challenge. So I would suggest thinking outside of the origami box ... or envelope for that matter.

Bear in mind that the whistle that actually works was the inspiration for the challenge:

There will be a list here with EVERY model participating in the challenge (from all six forums), so each voter may vote for any of those models.

Please don't hesitate if you have any other questions :).

I'm thinking I will also present a model to the challenge even though I can't really compete for the prizes :)

Leidygra from "Pajarita" presented the following model: WATER HOLDING CUP

Her five year old niece CREATED this model! She had been trying to create a working water container for quite some time. It all started when leidygra taught her the traditional origami cup. Her niece finally managed to create her own working cup and this is it:

Image

The cup was made from a 15cm. (6 in.) X 15cm. (6 in.) kami.

The best part was when her niece discovered she could turn it into a boat with a little change in the model:

ALQUIMISTA from "Pajarita" presented the following three models:

CELL PHONE SLEEVE

He got the idea after he accidentally dropped his cell phone in a bucket of water. It works with any cell phone and it has three compartments. Fold it using a 30cm (12in) X 30cm (12in), or 40cm (16in) X 40cm (16in) square of thick aluminium foil. It's hard to lock the model since you have to unfold it a little, you can add a lace it in the back in order to wear it. According to ALQUIMISTA it has to win if you don't want your cell phone falling in the water!

Level: intermediate.

PAGE MARKER

It' made with a 10cm (4 in) X 10cm (4in) square of bond paper. It's a simple figure that you can fold in three minutes.

Level: easy

CAP

You can fold it with a 50cm (20in) X 50cm (20in) or 60cm (24in) X (24in) square of thick aluminium foil. He used the comet base, since it helped for the cap's visor. It was hard to lock the visor and the back of the cap.

Leidygra from "Pajarita" now presents a: COIN PURSE

Her five year old niece has transformed her Water Holding Cup into a COIN PURSE. She just passed one of the flaps, that weren't locking the model, over the opening to close the purse.

Here's a photo of the artist with her new creation :) :

Here is my contribution:

A fountain pen!

Sorry about the rotten zoom at the end, but here's a picture of what I wrote:(my handwriting is pretty bad  )

The cap:

The back:

The inside:

Compatible with standard size ink cartridges!
Paper used:
2x 6x6cm
2x 10x10cm
1x 17x17cm
I used aluminium foil since regular paper isn't waterproof...or inkproof!
The hardest bit was stopping the ink from leaking all over: on my first try, my ink cartidge emptied in about 5 seconds  but now I've fixed the problem :D

My entry:

Image

A voodoo doll. This is probably the most useful thing in the world. No kidding. You can use it the more conventional way, of course, where you would curse someone with the doll, some needles and whatnots. The other main function of this doll is to be a substitute frustration reliever. Oh, you just ripped the head of your Lang mantis? Ripping it further, while satisfying, won't solve the problem. Rip one arm of your voodoo doll instead! The sound is SO satisfying, you'll be drooling for more. You get up to 4 members and a head to rip, total! What a bargain! What's more: while you can fold a fancy face for the doll, the simple voodoo doll version is very easy to fold from a 2:1 rectangle and a 16x32 grid! The doll is accessible by anyone! You can make these with any kind of paper too!

And for those not convinced, here are PLENTY of other possible uses for this doll:
- Imaginary friend
- Action figure
- Torch
- Darts target
- Emergency food
- Ignite in front of neighbour's door, ring and run prank
- Conversation topic
- Radish mascot
- Projectile
- Present
- Halloween candy
- Substitute teacher
- And many, many more!

The doll's purpose is to be destroyed! And remember kids, don't poke your finger with needles! Ouch!

and yes, this is partially intended as a joke

Thanks malifold. I was waiting for Aurele to share with Ekaterina, Quyet and I the models from Pliage de Papier to share them here. Since he was so occupied, he actually did it the same day you posted all of this, now that he has I can take it from here :).

Don't forget you can only post your models for the challenge in one of the forums, ok?
