any suggestions on how to start? besides boxpleating

If you dont want to use box pleating, you may take a look to Brian Chan Rei, Suigintou and the Ironman. But I would really sugest a more practical approach, Hideo Komatsu bodybulider seems a good start.

i meant on starting an elite, grunt, and a master chief origami model

I think what Froy meant is you could look at those models for inspiration - use a similar folding process for your own models.
