Re: Favorite Models To Fold
I like lang's models, as they all seem fairly logical in sequence, and you know what parts of the paper are going to go in the model, so it's easier to plan for what you are doing.

I must say I do admire some of his sequences. Though design wise, I don't think they are quite..how should I put it; artistic? They don't use the paper well in my opinion.Kyle2952 wrote:I actually like kamiya sequences (most of the time)..
Any Maekawa model is fantastic in sequence and in usage of the paper. Extra flaps are all accounted for and such.

I agree, razzmatazz. Some of his models do waste paper, but they have enjoyable folding sequences. Lang, on the other hand, uses his paper extremely efficiently but his models can be a pain in the ass to fold. I'd sacrifice paper usage for enjoyability any day personally.

I love that feeling when you collapse a Lang model though. From crease pattern, that is. Just all the creases falling into place and collapsing until it is flat. It's a beautiful thing.
Re: Favorite Models To Fold
Allow me to rephrase what I said-There are many fun steps in Kamiya's models, but here are many boring steps( think dragons). While the fun steps are quite enjoyable, the boring steps tend to steal your motivaion to keep folding. This is the real difficulty with Kamiya models in my experience-just having the will to sit down and fold. The end result, though, is always quite satisfying. Also, know that I am cool with your opinions, and I did not intend for this to be offensive in any way
.

Re: Favorite Models To Fold
Wow, I didnt think this would become such a popular topic. I guess to each his own. Everyone likes folding certain types of models by different designers. I love reading all you guys have to say so keep posting!
I would rather fail trying than fail without trying....

Re: Favorite Models To Fold
I have so many favourite models that it is hard to name just a few. Apart from Action Models, I love to fold everything from super complex to simple as well as tessellations and modular stuff with the only exception being modular boxes (I just don't get why I should use more than one paper for a box). Some of the models I fold very often by heart include Manpei Arai's Spinning Top, Pham Dinh Tuyen's Spider, Toshikazu Kawasaki's Rose (the one with the folding sequence by Kevin Hines), the Traditional Turtle, Jeremy Shafer's Magic Cube (Optical Illusion) and many others. The best folding sequences in my opinion are the ones by Hideo Komatsu and Román Díaz. If you haven't folded any of their models from diagrams so far, you definitely should. Those folding sequences are floating, it feels as if the model would fold itself.
Re: Favorite Models To Fold
my favorite sequence is probably kamiya's elephant.

Re: Favorite Models To Fold
Oftentimes a challenging model is inviting.
Other times, one just wants to relax with a clean, well thought out, fairly straightforward ingenious model.
There are four models that come to mind , when I just want a relaxing fold.
1. Nicolas Terry's Le Chien ( a dog)
Terrific design, great symmetry, fun to fold. Demands thin paper or foil paper due to numerous
reverse folds. A little treasure .
2. John Montroll's Turtle
While far easier than the rest, it has a very nice structure to it, easy & fun to fold, and much
appreciated when given as a gift. Fun to experiment with tiny sizes , as well as paper texture/design.
3. Roman Diaz's Acrobat Elephant
Superb design & diagram . The pinnacle of balance & clean aesthetics . The geometry is absolute
poetry .
4. Jun Maekawa's White Sox ( a cat)
Another easy model, but of exceptional symmetry & design. Relaxing to fold, pleasant impromptu gift.
To my mind, these models contribute to actual enjoyment, as opposed to stress, of origami .

Re: Favorite Models To Fold
I don't really have a favorite model because most are very unique, but one of my favorite to fold by diagram is Hideo Komatsu's Lion. It's like a pureland diagram, if pureland was stricly unsinking and open/closed sinking.

Re: Favorite Models To Fold
I LOVE all of komatsu's designs.his folding sequences feel as though you are just randomly fold things just for fun but in the end, everything comes together in an incredibly precise fashion. It feels like his designs were a product of free folding, but if that's the case, komatsu is the luckiest origamist in the world. I doubt that's the case but I just cannot see how the heck he is able to design things the way he does!
Also, I just recently purchased shuki's stag beetle diagrams and I must say, that was an INCREDIBLE model. For the most part, the folding sequence felt like something komatsu would produce.
Oh, and I forgot about chuya's recent grim reaper in the JOAS special. The folding sequence also felt like something that was a product of free folding, but the end result is stunning. Its not quite as efficient as komatsu's models, but its definately fun to fold.
