Origami Tools

Post by Jenny's Makes »

I've been watching some video tutorials and have noticed that people are using some sort of bamboo stick to make their creases. I've looked online for something similar and am only finding ones in America or plastic ones that are not that well made (bought one today...). Any tips on what is good to get and where to get it in the UK?

I have a condition known as Hyper Mobility which means I find some fiddly things difficult to do but I love origami and want to make life a little easier for myself, any more suggestions other than a creaser?

Thank you in advance for the help!

Hello, I guess you are taking about bone folders. There are various kinds of bone folders available. Of the big ones made from real bones the Martha Stewart one is recommendable. If you want one from Baboo, Leyla Torres sells beautifully crafted ones. Then there are wood ones like the Ultimate Origami Weapon sold by Nicolas Terry, but it seems he is out of stock at the moment. As a cheap plastic alternative the plastic part that that gets pressed out from the handle of one gallon milk bottles is a good substitute known as milk bone folder, not sure though whether milk is sold in such big quantities in the UK and you already said you want something more stable.

From what I know bone is recommendable since it is strong and doesn't leave marks on the paper as some other materials like wood often do.

Thanks :) I might take a fine sanding paper to the edges of the one I've just bought then (Papermania docrafts) and see how I get on with it, I hadn't thought of the wood making marks on the paper but now you've said it you're quite right! I'll ask the hubby if he know's if there's anything similar to the giant milk bottles you guys have :) but I don't think the plastic will be firm enough... stupid hands not cooperating with my hobbies :( and it'll only get worse... oh well I'll not give up as I love it so much :D

Thanks!

don't know how willing or able you are to fabricate your own origami tools, but the folder I use, I made myself from Micarta. It is a hard resin that is usually used for knife handles (I make knives too). Its available online and comes in sheets. It basically just takes a hack saw and some sandpaper to make a folder and that way you get the exact shape you want. You could probably use almost anything that is hard and available in a sheet.

just a suggestion.
