Tessellations for a Project
Guys i have to do a research project for school revolving around mathematics in art. We have to explore tessellations, penrose tiling and Escher's work. Now I want to know as much as possible about tessellations. Also which models would you suggest for me to fold and display?

@ Razz by OSME do you mean the convention about Math and Origami? If so which one revolves around Tesselations? Also i am just in high school, so i dont need too much depth and detail.

Re: Tessellations for a Project
They are a bit expensive if I remember correctly but there are table of contents for the third one here:
http://mars.wne.edu/~thull/osm/proctoc.html
Hopefully something is there for you. They also link to the abstracts.
EDIT: if you go to the amazons for the 5th and 4th you can click the image of the cover where it says "look inside" or what ever and look over the table of contents for each.

I see, I apologize that I can't help you further than that.
Though Brimstone had a good idea. And Eric Gjerde's website is even pretty useful:

Re: Tessellations for a Project
Try John Montroll's book "Origami and Math: Simple to Complex". This book has great models and also does a really good job at explaining the mathematics at a less complex level.
Here is the link to Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Origami-Math-Simp ... 0486488861
Also watch Robert Lang's TED talk:http://www.ted.com/talks/robert_lang_fo ... igami.html
And Between the Folds is amazing origami documentary that goes into the growing mathematics field; it's on netflix if you have access to that, but if not, it is on youtube here:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJRBiIeFe7Q
Good luck on your project! Let us know the results!

I have watched the last two. Thanks anyway. But thats not what i am looking for. I am searching specifically for the Math behind Tesselations.

Re: Tessellations for a Project
I don't think anyone's ever worked on this subject. This being said there's not much to work on. The math behind origami tessellations is the same as with any other type of tessellations, just "cover the whole plane with the repetition of a pattern".chesscuber98 wrote:I have watched the last two. These two generic articles might be of help: http://nrich.maths.org/4770 and http://mathforum.org/sum95/suzanne/whattess.html
