Re: MC - Methyl Cellulose
Okay so I have NEVER been able to make good double tissue. I'm hoping for Christmas that Phillip can come over my house and teach me :PPP jk. But really, I have just always failed at it. I know when it's properly made, it can be amazing. There's also different types of tissue. If you browse through flickr, some people say that their folds are "double tissue" but their type of tissue is Unryu. I have that stuff and can make it perfectly, and let me tell you, it's amazing! But just normal, wood based tissue, is extremely hard to make proper double tissue from.. at least for me

I would rather fail trying than fail without trying....

@justin I have tried folding with plain tracing paper, it works pretty well, but it is infuriating to fold with - especially when it decided to tip on an extremely complex model (shukis western dragon, happened to me twice in a row when i was shaping the legs)

Re: MC - Methyl Cellulose
Hey, uh.. can there be MC in Normal Glues?
Re: MC - Methyl Cellulose
Depends on what you define as normal, but yes, the possibility exists.
Wallpaper paste is most often MC maybe mixed with some additives to prevent fungal growth.
White glue is most often PVA. Clear adhesives are often synthetic resins.

Re: MC - Methyl Cellulose
Don't use PVA. or Mc or whatever you wanna call it. It doesn't work well with foil. It makes the tissue harder, but it doesn't really stick and kind of peels. Try white glue (like the cheapest thing ever in the USA) watered down with like 3/4 parts glue, 1/4 part water. That works for me. Then just use a thin layer of glue over the foil before sticking on the tissue

White glue = PVA
But I agree that the resin stuff doesn't sound useful for this purpose.
Try to get some kind of PVA glue, that should work.

Re: MC - Methyl Cellulose
oh really? thanks for the tip. I know it as basic "kindergarten white glue" the kind that kids eat or glue cotton balls on paper with XD

but in this video Sara adams says that any glue with resin stuff in it works fineBenlewisorigami wrote:Don't use PVA. or Mc or whatever you wanna call it. It doesn't work well with foil. I don't know where exactly Sara found this information but the safety data sheet says the glue she uses is made from PVA and inorganic fillers, no resin at all.
Without having seen the real stuff I can't say for sure whether the glue you have works for making Tissue Foil or not. What colour does the glue have? If it is transparent you can almost for sure say it won't work if it is white it may work. But why not just get a PVA based glue? You can get them as craft glue for kids, I've heard in the US Elmers is a usual brand. Or in any hardware store as wood or wallpaper glue. I found that the wallpaper glue works best for me, I use the same brand like Sara (Metylan Ovalit T) that is readily available in Europe. How much you have to water your glue down depends heavily on the brand, there may also be glues that you can use as is without adding water to them.

yep, the colour of glue is white. i am using fevicol SH , i have heard it is pva glue. but i am not sure
Re: MC - Methyl Cellulose
Okay, have you tried applying it undiluted? It is very hard to say why it doesn't work when I don't know the glue, but the best way to find out the right dilution is probably to just try.

Re: MC - Methyl Cellulose
ok listen, it worked when i mixed 1 spoon of water with 3 spoons of glue, it worked only when the glue was diluted a little,it was still thick, i have no idea what to do!
the ratio of water and glue should be 1:1 right?

Re: MC - Methyl Cellulose
According to this info the glue sounds okay. The glue that Sara and I use works best if diluted 1+1 but that doesn't necessarily mean that every glue has to be diluted like that. How do you apply your glue? Do you use a painters roll like Sara does in the video? If so you need to get a very thin layer and apply the paper as long as the glue is still moist. If the paper becomes wet, you used too much. It would be so much easier to show it to you in person, because even with a video you can only guess the consistency of the glue and the thickness of the layer applied. You're not eventually coming to the Italian convention the first weekend of November?
