I’ve been folding compound structures with longer rectangles for a number of years and have decided to produce some video on the techniques used to create some of my more complex models. The first step will be to make some simpler models to demonstrate the potential for these methods. I am presenting these models as challenges or puzzles for you to solve. There may be more than one method for solving these puzzles. See if you can solve these first two puzzles. Once a few people have demonstrated mastery, I will make some instructional videos with discussions of how these techniques were applied to more complex models like these:

Now here is a real challenge - fold the black and white pop-up from one long rectangle - the orange card is NOT part of the puzzle - the pop-up is attached to the card without glue.

Long Rectangle Puzzle #6 is the base for this fold.

The folding method used for 6 and 7 is quite interesting and a bit different than what is usually used in origami.

The have been several fantastic designs for folding a checkerboard from one sheet of paper - John Montroll's from his "Origami Inside Out" book is my favorite. Here are two more designs.

The first is very simple so I will reveal how it is folded (see second picture). I have a feeling that someone has done this before but I couldn't find it on line (not one folded from a single rectangle:





This second one takes a lot a patience and a rectangle with a ration of 1 to 256. However, it is quite unique and unbelievably if you compare the final fold (all squares show on top), it is one of the most efficient checkerboard folds out there. The ratio of the folded surface to the unfolded surface is about 2 to 1 . Motroll's ratio is 4 to 1.

I have finaly folded puzzle 1, will work on puzzle 2 sometime but not too soon.

Congratulations OrigamiGeek. You have found a successful solution - the one I show is a different and I believe simpler method but the results are the same.

Her is how to CUT those long rectangles from a standard 30" roll of wrapping paper. Use "Santee's Super Slicer"

The photo shows some of the parts used. You essentially slice through the roll before the paper comes off the roll. What is not shown is the frame. If there is enough interest, I will make a video tutorial on how to construct this device. You can BUY a roll slicer but the cheapest one I found costs about $70 with a $120 cost for shipping. It only cuts rolls up to 24 inches. Mine will cut rolls up to 40 inches or more (if you make the roller bigger but you have to make it yourself.

Oh, by the way -
Even if you just want to fold squares, this may be a great way to get unusual paper for your projects.
Just Slice off a roll to the desired square width, then cut off individual squares with an inexpensive cutter or just a pair of scissors as you need them.

I like make large paper squares from heavier foil paper on rolls. I slice off 10 or 15 inch rolls and can then cut off one square at a time as needed. From a 20 foot by 30 inch roll you can get 72 - ten-inch squares.
