Which grid?

This is Balance; I created it.



I designed it using a grid. Most of its bars are twelveths, a few others are sixths, but some are even forty-eighths.



That's why I wanted to ask you guys: in this case, are we talking about a 6 x 6, a 12 x 12 grid, or a 48 x 48 grid?

I hope to learn a bit more about origami jargon from this question .

Whenever I design a model with more than one pleat width, I generally refer to the most common pleat width when talking about the grid. So, judging by the creases in your second picture, I would call that a 12x12 grid.

And by the way, a 12th is spelled "twelfth". Just a tip. (:

You could call it "basically a 12 x 12 grid" with some other pleats such as 6 x 6 and 48 x 48 if you want to be precise.

More important, are you going to release the CP? I would like to fold your model.

Brimstone, that would make me very happy. Tell you what, I'll trace the lines with a pencil over the unfolded paper and take a more clear picture. One question, could you make a real digital CP from that picture. That way I could share it with everyone.

I already folded it from the CP provided, but still wonder how you where able to fold it so clean. I'd be very much interested in your folding sequence as mine turned out by far not so good as yours. Especially closing the boxes at the ends with so much paper accumulated there gives me a big mess.

As you can see on the far left and right, I've sunken the ends closed to lock the model, what surely isn't how it is supposed to be done?

The paper is elephant hide, 30x30cm with 125gsm, rather stiff.

I started of with folding the stand like this:

I think I can share you a couple of pictures this weekend to show you what you need. I should warn you, Balance will probably not work right with such dense paper. I suggest for example a 75 g/m2 paper. Remember also that you must add extra weight within the base. In my case I added four marbles inside.

Only now I'm learning how to fold my own model. I found a bit of time, so I've started to figure out a harmonious folding sequence. Before that, I marked the whole crease pattern before I collapsed and finished folding the model; it wasn't fun at all .

Figuring out the folding sequence has allowed me to finally enjoy making folds of Balance. Know what I mean? From this process I've learned that I created the model from a 24 x 24 imaginary grid.

This is the width of the horizontal bars: 4 + 4 + 2 + 4 + 2 + 4 + 4 = 24

And this is the width of the vertical bars: 2 + 2 + 5 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 5 + 2 + 2 = 24


Once you have those bars in the sheet you can start folding the model. No crease pattern and no collapsing . Just folding one step at a time.
