Foldable material with texture like rubber?
Foldable material with texture like rubber?
Hi guys,
I created a new model. For it to work it's best it should be folded with some material with rubber-like texture, like the texture of a balloon for example. It's so objects won't slide so easily. Know what I mean?
Is there a paper, or some other folding material you know of, that isn't costly and has this property? If not, is there a cheap way to get a rubber sheet that I could paste against paper? A couple of 20 x 20 cm (8 x 8 in) sheets would be enough. I've seen rubber sheets sold for physical therapy but they aren't particularly cheap.
Thank you in advance!

You can use polypropylene plastic which is like paper plastic money...the folds are often set by heat so buy enough for mistakes...glue does not adhere.....you can get latex rubber paint and make your own but it Wiltshire and erodes after a few folds

Sorry for the late reply. There's a paper known as "skin" which is exactly as you request it.

Thanks Brimstone! I looked around the web and I found something called curious collection skin. Might it be that one? Here's an URL: http://www.kwdoggett.com.au/brands/skin ... ollection/

I don't know if that's the same one I know. You can ask "Mechas", she has sold it in the past.

A cheap solution might be sandingpaper. Not sure if it is foldable. If it is, it would look pretty cool.

How in the world would sanding paper have rubber like texture?roodborst wrote:A cheap solution might be sandingpaper. Not sure if it is foldable. If it is, it would look pretty cool.

@Brimstone:
That can be achieved both, with a rubber like texture or with a grainy texture like sandpaper has.Gerardo wrote:It's so objects won't slide so easily.

Indeed. Stuff won't slide on sandingpaper. I tried folding with it once but tears really fast. Not sure if you could use MC on it. Would be nice if someone gave it try.

Re: Foldable material with texture like rubber?
Inspired by the previous posts, I bought a few different types of sandpaper and tried folding a simple tessellation out of them. Unfortunately, the result is that none of these papers was suitable even for a very simple model.
One important characteristic of sandpaper is how coarse the grain is and the other what kind of backing material is used to hold the abrasive layer (usually paper or cloth). Two different grains of paper-backed sand paper tore very easily across the crease lines as I tried to precrease a 16×16 grid from a 23 cm sheet. The result was a bit better if I folded the line as a valley first and then as valley (looking from the abrasive layer’s side) than the other way around. Still, I wasn’t even able to finish the grid before papers tore.
I had better hopes for the cloth-backed sandpaper and initially I thought I was going to succeed after I made the first few folds in one direction. But then I made a single crease in the perpendicular direction and the paper just tore off along almost the whole length. Actually, it felt more as if it broke rather than tore.
I think the main issue is that the abrasive layer is completely brittle, so making a sharp crease just breaks rather than bends it, and then then comes the fact that it consists of sharp-edged grains which pierce through the backing paper or cloth when a valley fold is made. If only mountain folds were needed, I think there would not be so much tearing. But you can only get so far with mountain folds alone.

Re: Foldable material with texture like rubber?
Did you try any pureland origami? I wonder if it would be less willing to break if it were wet? Maybe if it were attached to some backing...
Interesting idea!

Re: Foldable material with texture like rubber?
What I wonder right now is, whether it would make sense to use any of these various artistic spray paints that are available to get either a rubberlike or otherwise structured texture. The big question that remains is whether such a layer would also be brittle and break or if it folds just fine.
