wow, great dragon, as for the paper if they dont understand what methyl cellulose paper is then you should ask them for paper that won't absorb oil and water.....i think

Hey, good job with the dragon! The tail looks great! I once folded Engel's butterfly with non-treated paper (I believe it was also mulberry) and had the same problem-the paper didn't hold creases well and fibers splayed out at the crease lines. Methylcellulose will solve those problems, from what I've heard.

Methylcellulose, or MC as many people call it, is a type of glue called sizing. Sizing is used to bind paper fibers together, making it stiffer and 'springy'. MC dissolves in water, so you can wet the paper before folding it and when it dries, the paper will permanently hold the shape that you folded it into. I have actually never used MC, as I have also never gotten my hands on the stuff, but you should be able to order it online. Good luck with you folding-If you try the ancient dragon again (perhaps with MC treated paper?), I am sure we would all love to see it.

Methyl cellulose is the main ingredient of most wallpaper glues. You can often get it in building centres under brand names like Methylan.

Interestingly enough, MC is also a food grade product that is used as a thickener in many foods. (I wouldn't recommend eating the stuff from a wall paper store though

) For somehting that is so widely used, I sure had a hard time finding mine!

Some time ago I read that you can even buy it at pharmacies. Haven't tried yet since my pack from the building centre will last at least for some years, but maybe that would be a good source for people having trouble finding it.

and for the replyes on this stuff called MC..
I have some other kind of paper(I don't know how it's called yet) that is great. It's stiff and it holds creases great and it's almost as thin as tissue paper...in fact I folded Jun Maekawa's Devil a while ago from a 20 cm square and it turned out almost perfect...I think it doesn't even need MC. The guy who sold it to me told me it had rice fibres in it and that it's from Japan( but I don't know if he was just bragging to make me buy the paper

As for the MC...I really want to try it out. You say I can find it on the internet. Could you please post an adress ? I googled it and couldn't find much help

A while ago I went on a long, tiring, and frustrating two-day wild goose chase for MC. My mom drove me from store to store, with no results. I got so very depressed.

Then I asked my chemistry teacher and she gave me a container. Free.Just like that. If only I had done that earlier...

Anyways, they never use it, and the MSDS sheet that says it is not dangerous at all. People are also easily convinced about the safety of MC if you tell them the fact that some fast food restaruants use MC as a thickener in their fast food milkshakes.

To sum up my post: Ask your chemistry/science teacher (if you have one) for MC.

Hahaha-maybe if you know someone who works at McDonald's you could get some MC from them

. Great devil, origami_kid. It is very clean. That paper looks good, too-have you tried wet-folding it? Perhaps it is strong enough to withstand it. If you find a good source of MC, tell me too

Here is a place to buy MC-but keep in mind I just did a quick search on Google and have no idea of the legitimacy/reliability of the site. It looks like there are online suppliers of science supplies that could ship MC to you.

MC can also be used as a "laxative." It is really more of a high fiber binding substance. In the US, you can buy it under Citrucel. You may find it in other countries. However, I don't recommend buying it, because it is a fairly expensive way of getting it, plus it may have sugar, color, flavor, and other stuff that may react with the paper.

However, if you go to the local pharmacy and talk to the druggist, telling him why you want it, he may be able to help you out. Also, Wallpaper or paint stores may carry the same thing as wall paper paste. Get the smallest amount, because a little goes a long way !
