Origami Made Easy by Kunihiko Kasahara

Post by Nesting Crane »

Does anybody have this book and attempted the peacock on page 52-53?

Does anybody know why it doesn't turn out like it does in the illustration?

The end result is very beautiful, however, the one given in the instructions doesn't come out looking like the one in the illustration. I have tried to come up with alternative folds in my head to come to that same end result, but I am just too new to origami to know what to do. Does anybody have any suggestions? :?

I´m very sorry, I tried to fold and got exactly the same result as shown in the illustration, so I don´t know where the problem might be.
Maybe you could post a picture of your result, so that I can see where the difference is.

I can't provide a picture of what mine looks like. However, I'm sure I can give a very good discription. :)

In the author's finished illustration of the Peacock (i.e. the photo); there are contrasting colors. The tail feathers have the colorful print on them, while the head and neck have the back half of the white paper.

When I follow the instructions I get all of the colorful print, or all of the back side of the paper. It never comes out like the one in the photo.

Here is a photo from a website, that the folder gets the same end result that I get.

Someone's borrowed my copy of the book, so I can't refer to specific steps, but here's what you need to do. After you make the reverse fold that forms the neck from the body, take a look inside the gap of the reversed flap. You'll find that there are two additional layers of paper in there. You need to pull these out and wrap them around the outside of the flap. Unfortunately, this maneouvre is effectively a closed unsink, and is very difficult to accomplish. Good luck! After completing the wrap step, continue with the head as usual.

OK, you are right, I folded with unicoloured paper so I haven´t seen. There are different ways to get the result that you want. The easiest way is to turn the paper over after step two, but then you have to be creativ on your own. I had the wished result at the first try, but I can´t describe how I did it. It isn´t hard to do, I´m sure you will get it by doodling.

The picture above doesn´t show the peacock from this book. If you haven´t seen, the peacock in the book doesn´t have legs. I also think, that the peacock on the foto is folded from unicoloured paper, so that you can´t see if the head would be colourchanged or not.

This is perfect. You have both given me ideas that I can work with. I never could figure it out on my own because I haven't been doing origami long enough to invent alternative folds to a project. I thank you both for your help. :D

Well, that was easier said than done. All I got for my effort was 5 balls of crumpled up paper and a bad attitude.

I'm thinking it is the authors instructions, because they are too vague for a beginner. I don't have this problem with my other books, and if I mess it up it is due to the fact that my folds were usually uneven.Image

This is one of my favorite models from one of my favorite books. I just sat down and folded one so I can see where your trouble is.

Start with the colored side down.
The folds on step 2 are folded behind(mountain folds). If you turn the paper over to complete these folds, make sure to turn it back over before doing step 3.

Hope this helps.

metrodj,

That wasn't the problem. The problem was the photos of the peacock in the book.

Notice how the tail feathers has the colorful print showing up on it, while the head and neck are displaying the white side of the paper.

When I follow the directions I end up with all the same color for the head, neck, and tail feathers.

Anyway, I followed your dirctions just to see if maybe I was misinterpreting what the book was saying. Sorry, I came with the same end result.

Ok, so we've determined that it isn't step 2 and 3 that are giving you problems.

Are you folding step 4 over, from left to right? The part that will become the neck and head should be white at this point.

On step 5, just swivel (for lack of a better word) the neck portion out, you will be pulling paper out from the bottom. I had a really hard time with this when I was first learning the model (I remember being a beginner :D ). When you do it, it will look like you are stretching the paper.

The one I folded this morning came out just like the pictures, with a white head and neck, and colored tail feathers.

This really is a beautiful model, and I can't keep them on my counter at work because the customers keep nabbing them! I'm happy to do more for them, though.

Keep trying, once you do it, you will be doing the "I coulda had a V-8!" head-slap!

:D

Yes! That move is driving me crazy! It doesn't go smoothly. ](*,)

OK. Now this is getting scary. First origami_8 is telling me that she is following directions and having no problem. Now, you are telling me your are following the directions and having no problem. I must be incompetent.

Let us backtrack then. I followed them just to see if maybe I didn't know what I was doing in the first place, so I tested the directions you gave me. I ended up with a white head and neck; however, I also ended up with white tail feathers. :?

I don't know if that gives you an idea of what I did wrong or not. However, it is all that I got. I am REALLY confused now.

origami_8,

I am stunned. Absolutely stunned.

You just solved the problem. I don't understand how I could mess it up like I did. I guess, without colored illustrations, I was just getting turned around. So when I performed the step of the photo that you showed, I had it in reverse. So I must have doen the other folds backwards without knowing it.

OK. I just did the fold again to see if I could figure out what I did wrong. It was the first illustrated step you have displayed. I did that step correctly, however, I kept the white side facing forward, thinking that was the front. Now that I have examined the illustrations in the book, I now see the author did show that in the illustration; however, it is so discreet that it escaped my attention.

Is it any wonder why I barely made it out of high school?Image

Whew! Well, now that problem is solved. Thank you everyone for all of your help. Also, thank you origami_8 for your photo illustrations, they were also a big help with solving the complications I was having with step 5.

metrodj,

Your right. I did.
