Robert J. Lang - Tarantula (Insects II)

So I just got into Robert Lang's origami and I really want to make a 'good' model not like one of those things from a kiddies origami book. Not that they are bad but Lang's origami is so amazing! So I got through alright until I got to step 12. It says 'Dent the top. Flatten'. I'm baffled how you get it to look like step 13. And on step 13 it says to unsink. I've never done this before. I looked up an open and closed sink and found a helpful video showing you how to do it. But I can't find anything on unsink. Help would be greatly appriciated .

The dent the top step is sort of like a sink. You need to spread apart the top-most and bottom-most layers, then make the dent along the lines, pushing from above. Then, the top left and top right corners should meet each other in the middle to form the top of the picture in step 13.

Unsinks are shown at the beginning of the book. It's pretty much like pulling out some loose paper.

Yay! Thanks mate I get it now! The 'spread apart the top-most and bottom most layers gave it away for me. I didnt think it would be that simple lol. But I still don't understand the unsink on step 13. I've had a look at the instructions.

Ok, so for the unsink:

If you open up the top right flap and look inside, you'll see the corner that forms to the right. You essentially need to push in on that corner from behind and invert it, pushing it all the way to the left.

Another way to look at it is a closed sink, but you're bringing the paper towards you, towards the left. The sink lines would be the central vertical crease of the model, and the vertical edge of the right flap that lies along that crease.

EDIT: Why the f*** has my image been changed to some porno thing??!

The green flap is what appears to be the the 'top right' flap which is inside the sink which I made. If I inverted it and did a closed sink it should end up as on the picture, and the flap above the red line can be sinked down again.

But looking at step 13 to 14 the noticable differences are it has been turned over and a flap folded to the right. Then looking on the left, there are 3 layers instead of 2 layers trapped between one layer. How do I get to this?

This is what Step 13 looks like in the book. The flap on the right is slightly lifted up, with the letter A at its bottom left corner.

Lift the flap up more to the right to look underneath:

I've labeled the hidden corner B. This corner needs to be turned inside-out from behind.

Now flatten to the left:




I hope it is self explanatory. Let me know if you need more help with this.

I'll also warn you that there are some more difficult steps coming up in the model. This model is not too easy, but the end result is worth it too.

For practice for your first time, I would recommend foil paper, since it is very thin. In terms of size, I would recommend something above 10 inches for your first try.

For a nicer tarantula, I've used black mulberry tissue paper (or unryu - I think they're the same thing).

Thank you so much mike352! Now I understand an unsink. I'll keep those images for reference .
Also I used A4 plain paper which I cut into a square (21x21cm). It's kinda nackard now from all the folding lol. I don't have any 'foil paper' or special origami paper. But would tin foil do ? It should make sinks super easy.
You can post images on a forum by putting (img) and (/img) around the url of the image. To do this though you will need a direct link to an image. A good site for this is imageshack.us. However it seems to have been hacked into the porno shack or something...

Tin foil by itself is not too convenient and rips easily. You can glue tin foil or aluminum foil to a sheet of tissue paper to make tissue paper, which is commonly used in origami. Here's some more information:

Hmm I'm stuck again sorry lol. At step 18 and 19. I unsinked in step 17 so you get a kinda mirror image. But there isn't anything else to unsink after that! Well there is a tiny bit to unsink, one on each side. But they only form half flaps when pulling them out.

I'm not sure how to help you in the diagrams (I have never folded the tarantula), but for tissue foil you may want to buy some spray adhesive too-it is a lot easier than a glue stick. And tissue foil does not sink well at all-the creases do not reverse direction easily.

Notice there are 3 layers. Each of those 3 layers need to be unsunk separately.

hmm I had to mess about through the layers to get this. So the top of the rabbits ear should have 3 layers right? And the bottom part just has one yes? Seems I havn't got the hang of unsink completely yet. Can you go through 17 to 19 please? And show the end result. I still seems to get the result as in the 2nd picture of my previous post. It's like the flaps aren't long enough. And it doesnt look like the should be a gap between the paper at the top.
