I haven't folded the model recently but I would fold up to step 38 in order to get the precreases and then open up the point and collapse the model to step 53 (these steps are from the diagrams in Origami Insects and their Kin).

Regardless, its very difficult to avoid ripping the paper without using tissue foil or paper resized with methylcellulose. I remember folding this model with 6" gold foil paper (found in packs at Michaels) up to step 79 without ripping. A little after this step, the paper ripped at the back of the neck when I tried to flatten it.

I made it past the point split for the first time ever! I used newspaper. It worked perfectly. I am so surprised :D

Just to add something, the point split and closed sink later require a little bit of luck and skill. The paper quality is important, but I have proof that it can be done with normal copy paper satisfactorily.

Please don't use shorthand English. A large number of folks are not native English speakers (for example I speak Texan :-) ... and it is harder for them to decipher IM or acronym-speak. [One or two are OK, but consider other folks]

Thanks,

is there something wrong with tape?

i have a newsflash for all the origami "masters" here. not all of us have MC or feel like making tissue foil. if your paper is not particularly strong, one thing to do is to tape the paper on the underside of spots that you know are prone to breaking no matter how carefully you fold.

further, if you are practicing a complex model, and it tears at step 200, what are you supposed to do? throw all that work away?

Hi! It's been a long while since I've been active on here. I deleted my Dropbox years ago, so some things, like my Dragonfly Varileg guide, are lost to time. I may still have other things, though! Email me if you have any questions.

Well i folded Lang's Praying Mantis from Origami Insects 2, and i must say... the sinks and the thickness of this model make it very hard to fold. (in my opinion) As someone said earlier, the legs are extremely thick making them difficult to fold, and "double-rabbit-earing" the neck was very hard to do i thought...

If anyone needs help on this model I'd be glad to help while its still fresh in my mind how to do it

Folded from 48x48cm foil paper. (excuse the picture quality... iphone camera)

I made that model from the CP on his site a while back, and it turned out great. The only problem I had was the back legs being too thick.

You should try with Reinolds baking paper, I used a square of the maximum size allowed by the roll of paper. (I think is 25x25)

And use glue to shape it.
