Non-Folders Reactions to Your Origami

Tbh, I haven't actually tried any. I can only guess that my love for modular geometric models is a combine love of folding, geometry and puzzles. Not to say that I wouldn't like and/or try 1 sheet geometric pieces, I just haven't had the pleasure yet, so I couldn't say.

If you actually like geometric one piece models, there are some i can recommend. Check Thoky Yenn's models http://www.britishorigami.info/academic ... igami.html many of them are in this category.

And if you have access to books try to find models by Fred Rohm, Philip Shen and Chris Palmer

I don't really have money for any books, but I'll see of the liabrary has any of those. I'm taking a break from current projects, so I think I'll take your advice and check those sites out. Thanks!

I get oohs & Awes form everyone who sees my modular creations, a lot of people ask me to make them one, which I happily oblige, others suggest i sell them. th eproblem is the time it takes to amke some of the more desirable pieces i would have to charge an astronomical firgure to justify my time spent, i have spent 3 hours daily for 1-3 months on some models.

others ask me to "show them how" well that is easier siad than done.

A friend of mine at work who is heavily into origami him & i came together and made an book diagramming the steps to fold individual untis and leave it up to the student to figure out how to assemble different structures.

I usually make Polyhedra, fractals, and other geometric models.
One time I made a Menger sponge out of open frame units and one of my co-workers recognized it as a menger sponge, that was gratifying.

This is exactly about what I talking. Such models are the best - simple or complex, never mind.

People reactions to me folding are the worst.
My classmates go: Origami is for suckage people, HALO is for ownage people.
OR
Look at my shuriken(Which actually is kirigami, and when I say that, I mean true kirigami), its so ownage!
They shun at the sight of intermediate origami, saying that I'm a retard as I spend 2hrs on the table, just folding, which is usually incomprehensible for people of my age (13).

I used to get that response. I just replied with a smile and an "Ok!" and continue folding.

The best reaction I've ever gotten:

The student teacher in my English class was leaving, and had loved all the things I had made throughout the year (unfortunately, the only day she missed was the one I brought in Ryu Jin). Anyway, the only thing she had ever asked me to make was a phoenix. Remembering this, I went home and made some blue double tissue, which turned out to be my worst piece of paper ever. I somehow salvaged a 30 cm square from it, and proceeded to make her Kamiya's phoenix 3.5. I gave it to her the next day, and she loved it! She carried it around all day.

A few week ago I folded Anibal Voyer's three-headed dragon. My sister said I was crazy (because it is too difficult), my father loved it, and my mother said it looks like one of the beasts of the Apocalypse... (she actually liked it)

only to say a bit about me: i was on an origami event on "days of japanese culture" this year and i was a techer mostly for children. i brought my best of models along to show off i have been interested with origami seven years and designing four or five years. you can see my models on my flickr photostream
on the days of J. culture i had been folding a traditional crane with one girl (10 years old) and a couple of people watched. one eenage girl:"that's complicated!" - me:"that is a very simple model" - teen: "ah.. simple..." XD but you see, czech republic isn't any big power in this, our origami society has thirty or fourty members, mostly only interpreters, not designers.
and all other reactions are mentionned here, people are asking: "what is the most complex model you have ever folded" "how long did it take to do" "how did you start with paperfolding" "teachers at shool ask me sometimes: "what are you foling" and i think the "muddles" are always more amazed than skilled origamists =P

My classmates never seem to regconize what I fold ( look at my gallery to find out why), so they say that it is real crap and that I just crumple at sheet of paper and pull out the limbs. That's really irritating.

don't worry mate. i am also doodling - crumpling - a paper. sometimes it is straightforward to make at least a basic idea of a new model, but sometimes it ends as a paperball in a bin =P
