Mailing Origami

I could've sworn there was a thread with tips on shipping origami... but a search is turning up nothing. Am I hallucinating? I'm thinking of sending Nguyen's eagle... it's a pretty sturdy model and I think will survive the trip, but just looking for tips, if there are any.

When I send origami, I usually put it into a big ziploc bag, and fill it up with soft stuff and inflate it, and then pack it as if it were any other package.

what i have done is to take an empty 20 ounce bottle of soda...cut the top of...insert my origami, replace the top upsidedown...tape it all together....tape the address onto it..... and viola 60 cents or something and it wont get crushed...a friend and i have used the same bottle 3 times back and forth from washington to georgia

Pringles boxes are very stable as well.

However, Pringles boxes are rather small and most likely wouldn't fit a model like the eagle.

If I were to send an origami model via mail, I would put it in a cardboard box filled with foam. That way the model most likely will not be crushed and all movement is absorbed by the foam. This method would probably not even be that expensive when it comes to shipment costs, because it would be rather light.

Yes, but be careful with cotton wool as filling material, because it can be a bit hard to remove from your model. You can use it, but I'd recommend putting the model in an additional little bag to avoid direct contact.

By the way, I remember a topic like this as well, but am not sure if it was here or on the Mailing List. Couldn't find it though, no idea what a good search word would be.

In the USA, the Post Office has free, sturdy boxes for sending via Priority Mail, and it costs about $4 - $5 USD for 3 day delivery. The boxes are various sizes from about VCR tape size and larger. I've never had any problems with them, if you can find something equivalent and the right size.

Do you use any kind of packing material? I've found a box where the eagle fits almost exactly, save for a wire stand that I want to include. I don't think it should move a lot during the mailing process since it's a snug fit, but again, I don't have a lot of experience with this.
