@legionzilla Yes i know i could have shaped the crab better but i just folded it quickly to help someone out on the "diagrams" section. It was from printer paper, and you know that doesnt shape too well to begin with

From what I can see of the under-side, the folding structure that forms the boxes is one that myself, and some other folders have come up with independently of each other, and it looks like you've discovered it yourself too. It's a nice way of making box shaped structures.firstfold wrote:Nine segment tessellated closing box -

Thank you Spirotof cat,
I was aware that there were many fairly similar folds for the box structure - including your own for this model so I wasn't quite sure as to it's originality. The box structure is identical except that there are additional (functional) creases to allow the box to close up. Secondly, the fold along the edges is different (but may also be used in some others models). I have seen models with 4 sections when in the open position). My method for edging may have been used for some "shelf -like structures"
Have you seen other models that have the following characterisitcs?
1. The box will open and close into a block structure
2. When the box is open there are more than four sections
3. The box opens and closes in two (or more) different directions?
Like any model is may be the combination or application of folds that makes it unique but given the great amount of fantastic tessellation and corugation work by like Spirotofcat and others, I am still uncertain that this has sufficient originality to be called unique.
But then again, I am famous for reinventing the wheel - just consider the wheel structure for my Origami Duesenberg. Perhaps I should inclued a curved "turret fold" for greater originality.
Thank you all for your input.

Pretty much the only applications of this fold that I've seen are the ones I linked.firstfold wrote:Have you seen other models that have the following characterisitcs?

I haven't seen anyone do exactly what you did with it, so I'd say you've got plenty of right to call the model your own.
The fact that the basic underlying structure has been independently discovered by a few different people just makes me thing it must be a sensible way of achieving that shape, and like any other basic fold structure it shouldn't be considered the property of any particular folder.
Your model reminds me of a toy I've had that was eight cubes joined in a certain way so that they could be folder and unfolded in a never-ending sequence. Do you know the thing I mean? That would be cool to see an origami model of.
