origami folder wrote:i have tried both dragons many times with large 20-25 in. paper and medium 12-14 in. paper and i get stuck rather quickly. for the ancient dragon does any one know how to do the "pleate while squashing" step. this is where i always get stuck.
it has information/pictures on almost every difficult step...
takwing also posted the photo diagrams i made on his site. so you can check out the step by step photos i took of this model.
Wait.... failed? It's a pretty simple model to fold... Well, you should try it again and again till you get it....
And Benthor was right; the AD is more a long-winding series of steps.
it may be hard to believe but i pretty much shredded my paper by step 4 and step 23 was a disaster. and for the ad i can't seem to get 59 right and end up shredding my paper. so it is not that the model is difficult it is just that i keep shredding my paper.
there are many young folders out there who become entranced with kamiya's super complex origami. the wizard is especially attractive as it was clearly modeled off of the gandalf from the highly popular (and way overrated) lord of the ring movies. they blanche at the high price tag for the book, and this being the internet age, rapidly find a free copy on the web. now, with their ill-gotten diagrams at hand, they just as rapidly find the models to be beyond their abilities and basically need to be walked through the whole thing by asking for photo-diagrams and videos for "difficult" steps like mountain and valley folds. probably being too young to realize that it's actually very time-consuming for people to be doing that.
this isn't another copyright rant. rather, a rant about all the interesting origami that is being pushed aside because of it. if you can't do the swan, then maybe this book is too hard for you. that's nothing to be ashamed of. start with some montroll books and work your way up. both "origami for the enthusiast" and "animal origami for the enthusiast" are classics, incorporating classic bases with whimsy. the latter is available used off amazon for $2. "origami sculptures" is also nice, and i see a used copy of "origami sealife" off amazon for a buck. in fact, the lang's fiddler crab in "sealife" is harder than anything in kamiya's book; it's very difficult to do the closed sinks neatly to finish the model.
trust me, the ancient dragon, ryu-zin, and phoenix are not the beginning, nor the end of origami. if you'd gone through the ancient dragon thread (and there was a time when it was customary to lurk before asking for help), i had already stated multiple times the hardest thing about the ancient dragon is finding paper large enough, thin enough, and strong enough. i finished the dragon before, and have stopped half-way through another attempt as i got bored reverse-folding x 1000 to shape the horns. yawn. by contrast i have done kamiya's kabuto-mushi four times; and i hate insect origami!
it's also okay to give up on a model now and come back to it after you've gained some more experience. i was having trouble with the wizard at step 119. i went and folded some other things, two years later (there really is a lot out there!), tried again, and had no problems.

i have started from the bottom. it got to the point where there was nothing i couldn't fold Google Robert lang's black forest clock i have folded that successfully 3 times with paper i made my self. i even started to design my own models, so far i have 2. they aren't that great but i still did it. however this is the first and only time i have had any difficulties with origami and it is very frustrating that it is happing, that is why i am asking for so much help. as for the wizard i had no problem with it until step 104 when shaping the fingers. and i was using wax paper.
Are you trying to say you have been magically tabooed from this book or something?
It just sounds funny when you say you have folded the BFCC 3 times from handmade paper, yet failed miserably at the Splash Swan.
Seriously, use your handmade paper or something! Surely the Carnotaurus can't be that hard.
My thoughts exactly, Whisper . Maybe you should try some of that handmade paper to fold the swan, origami folder . I also can't wait to see some pictures of that clock .
under normal circumstances i would use that hand made paper. but here it is started to get really cold and it need to make it out side. also i don't have enough matierial or money to get more matierial. so it it have to wait for a wile. as for a photo of the clock, i gave all 3 to friends and they have since move away.
Sorry if I am mistakenly sceptical, but that sounds quite unlikely to me.
Anyway, standard kami can work for most of the models in that book, like the Carnotaurus, the Eagle Ray and the Coelophysis. I would start with the Eagle Ray or actually maybe even the Smilodon, that isn't actually that hard and has a pleasing sequence.
I just don't understand how you can have trouble folding something as simple as the Eagle Ray, while you are so obviously beyond that level. Maybe I have overstressed this point, but it confuses me to no end.
you would be surprised. i receltly tried to make a paper crane. and messed it up. the wings were destroied and the head was off center. however i do think this is just a slump and not only is it affecting my origami but many aspects of my life because i haven't been able to solve simple manipulitive puzzles either(such as the rubiks cube). i try a different folding techneque late last night and was able to finish the "yellow bird" and the "swan on lake" but they did not lool that great but i did finish. i may have also been taking it too seriously, too the extent that i trying way to hard to make it perfect, that i missed how to do simple steps. thanks too all that have helped me and thosse that have critisized me, both have alowed me to see that i was not doing my best work.
You could always e-mail those friends for pictures regarding the clocks . And if you messed up the crane... dude.... but, I won't get to involved on this topic.
P.S. Please remember to spell check your postings; it can be quite difficult to read with words like "Lool" and "receltly." It isn't too hard to figure out, but still...
was able to finish the "yellow bird" and the "swan on lake"
you should post pictures of the models you've made If we see what the problem is with the model we can give you tips and try to help you. you can learn alot from people here. Thats one of the best ways to imporove.
i was looking at you flikr and my chocobo looks the same it is just not as neatly folded. i was using 8 inch paper and wondered how big was the paper that you used. i also just recently realized that part of my difficulties are because i am using small paper. generally between 6 and 9 inch. i believe that would be between 15 and 22 cm.
