Origami Sightings

Post by insaneorigami »

Well, I have been a member of the o-List for a while, and have noticed many people posting "Origami Sightings." I thought... Why not have one on the forum? So. To start this topic off:
http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/big-i ... rigami-pg2
This is a link to a national Geographic article that is about... ...Origami! I was reading Geographic Magazine, and imagine my surprise when I saw Robert Lang in the article... hmmm

Well, in this topic, post your origami sightings :). If you see something related to origami in the newspaper, on a website (etc.), just post it up here :). They are interesting, and I enjoy looking at them. I hope you guys do too.

I saw that same article! My family's realtor left the article on our dining room table.

Hi! It's been a long while since I've been active on here. I deleted my Dropbox years ago, so some things, like my Dragonfly Varileg guide, are lost to time. I may still have other things, though! Email me if you have any questions.

Sugestion to the moderators, since this seems like a good idea, why not making it into a sticky post?

Well, I know I get more than my fill of this stuff on the O-list. I almost want to block those lame origami sightings messages. Sorry folks, but every time you see a paper crane does not need mentioning. Of course if I were to block them, I wouldn't get much in my email--half of the O-list email must be these sightings.

Also, I've received this article three times. It was kind of funny when I opened up a mailing from my dentist's office and saw that in there :) And all up to date from 2004!

Well, many people are not members of the o-list, so they don't see many origami sightings outside of thier own :). True, seeing a crane mentioned in passing is kind of... ....well, not very exciting. But seeing an article that mentions circle packing, and includes Robert Lang is, I think, pretty exciting.

And yeah, the o-list does include lots of sightings, and many of them aren't that interesting; but you do get the occasional cool one every once in a while :)

Don't know if this counts as a good sighting or a boring sighting, but it's not just another crane. :) The Vanessa Gould documentary, Between the Folds, is going to air on PBS's Independent Lens on December 22nd.

Between The Folds is quite good, nothing too new though but there are some gems:
1) A quick clip flicking through Robert Lang's Mule Deer diagrams, one by one, but very quickly.
2) A video of Yoshizawa Sensei folding!
3) Chris Palmer folding his Flower Tower;
And 4) Paul Jackson discussing both his organic pleated forms and his one-fold concept.

I saw Robert Lang's dragonfly in the movie Coraline. Saw his name in the end credits. :)

In the newest National Geopgraphic magazine, there is an article called "Extreme Origami". It's about Robert Lang's computational stuff and functional folding, mostly sciencey and nothing about the art in it. Still good to see it's known about though.
