Does that mean nobody know about airmail paper that Lang mentions of his website(http://www.langorigami.com/info/paper/paper.php4)?

I think this airmail paper he refers to is just the paper you get to send it per mail. It's a little bit more lightweight than usual copy paper but stronger. You should be able to get it in every office store.

I've been thinking about making hand-made paper for a while - I was thinking about using 100% overbeaten abaca pulp. I was e-mailing Michael LaFosse, and he said that that would make really strong, thin paper.

The downside is that I don't really feel like making a frame... ....Hhhhhmmmmmm....

I go to Michaels to get spray adhesive, and tissue paper :). I stopped buying Kami a long time ago, when I discovered tissue foil, and double tissue.

Also, here's something interesting that I learned on Dr. Lang's website:
Kami actually means paper in Japanese - if you went to Japan and said that you wanted some Kami, they would think that you just wanted paper.

Also, origami comes from Oru, and Kami :)

You may not need to "Make" a frame. You may be able to cannibalize something, such as an old (or new) window screen... etc.

- Hank Simon

It might be interesting to learn how other people make their paper ?

Joseph Wu uses Elephant Hide almost exclusively (and colors it himself with ink). Sipho Mabona uses a specific kozo that comes in a variety of colors. It all depends on what you fold and what you like.

If anyone wants more information, I'd be glad to talk more. Smile
Do you know how Joseph Wu goes about coloring the elephant hide? And I would love to hear which specific type of kozo Sipho uses...I remember hearing this someplace before, but i've forgotten where!

Gladly!

Okay, Joseph just uses acrylic water-based inks and a spray bottle. I've been meaning to look into ink, but I haven't gotten started yet.

As for the kozo, I'm pretty sure Sipho gets his from NY Central: http://www.nycentralartsupply.com/asia/japan3.html. Scroll down to the really colorful section, and specifically to the kozos. It's $16 a sheet. I'm fairly sure mine is the same, and I get it at Hiromi Paper: http://02a9443.netsolstores.com/echizen ... dkozo.aspx. This shop is located in Santa Monica, about a half hour drive from my house.

I believe the full name of the paper is Echizen Shikibu Kizukishi Kozo--and there may be a "colored" in there too. Maybe Echizen Shikibu 100% Colored Kizukishi Kozo.

I have folded this stuff a couple times (but in small scrap sheets), and it's the most amazing stuff I've ever folded. I don't design many red insects though, so I have yet to start on my sheet. This Bear was folded from the brown some years ago. http://www.flickr.com/photos/oriholic/2228284936/ (I know it says gampi--I thought it was, but it's kozo--gampi doesn't come in that color!).

All the nice paper I've got (save a few pieces), I had got in New York when I went to the Origami Conventions :B There is essentially nowhere that I can buy nice paper around where I live.....

Yet there are plenty of paper stores in New York. How unsurprising :/
But really. I WISH there were places I could get nice paper near where I live because I can't predict what model I'm going to design next and that makes picking out paper colors hard >_> I never expected I would fold a pig, so now I don't have any nice pink paper :(

(and my god, it feels like its been years since I was last here ._. anything big or important happen in my absense?? I mean aside from the Sarah Morris thing, I already knew about that.)

I found some real good rice paper. Its like 30 gsm and is pretty strong. The only downside is that it gets crumpled too easily due to its thinness. Do you think I need to MC it?

Probably. A lot of papers that aren't kami or printer paper need to be MCed before you use them. That will make the paper crisper (less floppy), fibers won't splay out at crease lines, and the paper will hold creases better. Also, the paper becomes wet-foldable!!!

i like paperjade and enjoy their services, but consumers should be forewarned that the shipping is "free" b/c they often sell items at a higher cost than competitors. for instance, a 500 sheet pack of kami from the paper tree costs $19.95, whereas the same item paperjade is $26.95-- ~ 35% more.

not a complaint, just pointing out that nothing in life is "free" really...

For practice, I get a roll of kraft paper, 600mm width, 20m length and 60g/m2. Yes, you have to cut it to size, but you can do it in your sleep after a while, and it's so much better than A4. Very cheap too.
