I just wanted to try and clarify something ... the top of the hat is alternating valley and mountain folds, correct? I had a problem last night collapsing it because I was folding the dashes and as mountains, because I thought that's the way it's supposed to be done.

Just wanted to know if it's as easy as alternating all the way down to the face ... then it would be much easier.

I folded this again, starting by folding into fifths instead of thirds, resulting in longer legs and arms. Here's a picture.

How is it by starting with fifths you get longer legs and arms? Wouldn't you have to do the crease pattern differently then?

The CP is different with 5ths, but it is a clean transition. The only difference that 5ths makes is that you have more pleats around the abdomen and the arms are stretched out longer. You should also get more flaps for the face.

So it definitely wouldn't be a 24 x 24 grid then. perhaps 30 x 30?

I wish these dwarves had necks. Joisel has some musicians on his site, and I love the long droopy necks they have ... very cartoonish.

I have yet to see a CP that produces a person with a neck.

Sorry for all of the posts ... but I found some things that might interest some of you:

This is Joisel's hobbit. A taller version of the dwarf. Looks like a rectangle to me, but I'm not sure.

Here's something quite useful for everyone needing to know the precreases. A step by step guide:

Surprised no one has written on this yet. I am having a little trouble with the torso. Can anyone help me with which line is valley or mountain? There are a lot of lines compared to the more straightforward dwarf. Here's a picture of the collapsing process:

I found it based on a grid of 32 X 40 so a rectangle with ratio 1 X 1.25.
It will try to collapse the base but I'm very bad at it

I'm just stuck at the torso ... everything else worked out pretty good. I think there are a lot of unnecessary lines where the torso should be, which is making it more difficult.

I think I was able to collapse the base but it's very messy! My forth CP
it's not worth a picture though and I can't even shape it
I still don't understand the bottom part of the body butI think it has to do something with moving the edge up to provide more length to the legs.
The top part of the body is a sink (?) to narrow it down a bit...

I managed to collapse it as well ... but I think I am doing the body wrong. The legs are almost the same length as the dwarf, as well as the arms. In the picture with the CP it clearly has long limbs.

Not sure what I can be getting wrong with it. :(

Here's my finished hobbit:

Legs are a little short, which I don't understand. Once again I think I may have messed up the torso. Anyone know how to fix this?

Hey guys, I'm not sure if this will help anyone with the hobbit, but I found another version with the Mountain and Valleys labeled.

I tried it, but it still wasn't terribly clear, so I'm still in the collapsing process. I know that some of the 45 degree creases on the lower torso are incorrect, so that's not helping either.

Yeah the torso on mine wasn't working out either. I just don't get what is going on with all of those lines for the torso. I'm thinking some of the final shaping folds were included, thus confusing the person trying to fold it. Mine had shorter legs and arms as well, which defeats the whole purpose.
