How does everyone get the nice shaping for the face? I was thinking of using tweezers. Do you just unfold those flaps used for the face and then shape?

I just move hat down to did effect of "hiding eyes" and hide under the hat first triangle. The second triangle - nose, third - beard.

I found these instructions for the face shaping somewhere (I don't remember where).

I found a good way to do the face.
Sink the top triangle upwards to
get two flaps inside, squash fold
these to make eyes and use the edge
on top for eyebrows.

Then rabbit ear the second flap and
then squash fold for the nose.

The last two flaps can be stretched
(kind of like an elias stretch) for
a beard, and I put a pleat in to
form a mouth.

Those are pretty good tips. I tried folding another one, yet I had 14 pleats from the top to the waterbomb bases, and it was supposed to be 12. No idea how I got 14 but the model got screwed up in the process because of it. Collapsing the upper half is a bit of a pain because of the hat.

Quick and dirty folding of the Hobbit from 21x26.3cm copy paper:

The legs and arms aren't supposed to be longer (but thinner), only the body is stretched in comparison to the dwarf. The CP seems all correct to me.

I wish there was a video on how to do the collapsing properly. Even with the dwarf, when I get to the base and try to follow Joisel's instructions, I don't have the flaps to close the back, etc. Here is another fold of a new dwarf:

Instead of folding my usual Joisel dwarf (24 by 24 grid) , I folded the one from the Tanteidan 13 convention book. Well, It was actually from the link on page 9. This one was from a 7 by 7 grid, so it was actually a bit harder. However, it all pays off. The longer limbs, and extra face flap really help! However, you really should try the first dwarf before folding this one, as that will also help with the collapse. Might post pics later...

I folded the older one as well ... I didn't fold the whole grid though. I just got to the base of the old one, and tried following some of Joisel's tips for the new one in Tanteidan 13. Folding the 28x28 grid doesn't seem necessary to me ... especially since most of the folders on this site achieved some longer legs and enough detail in the face to no really need the extra flap (s).

By the way ... the hat is a joke. It's nearly impossible to precrease that. There's little to NO reference points for it. What are you supposed to do??? Guess??? What an unbelievable joke.

To be exact it is fully referenced. Where are your problems and what model, Dwarf (which version), Hobbit?

I am doing the old version of the dwarf since it is the easiest. I can do it fine when I print the crease pattern, but when it comes to the hat and not printing the pattern it feels like guesswork for the hat. Everything else I can do perfectly, but I mess up the hat a lot and it won't collapse properly. I just don't want to have to use the crease pattern as an aid all of the time. I can't find anywhere where the hat lines up with any other part of the model.

Thanks for the help

I wasn't aware of the angles and things like that ... haven't used a protractor in years let alone picking that out by my eyes. I'm really happy with my current dwarf, but I am doing one without the crease pattern now. Then I will try to perfect the face. I wish there was a detailed guide on the face alone ... or at least techniques to get certain parts i.e. squash the flap to get a beard, etc.
