It seems to me her intentions were good. It is unfortunate that folks may take her mistake as truth about the origin of the word. It would be nice if she followed it up with a statement correcting that particular point but I have a feeling that may not happen.
Looked like similar stuff about Lang in the PBS special "Between the Folds". (my new favorite show since I saw it for the first time this last December.)
At least she's trying to help get the word out. And a kudo's to Lang for getting some more "airtime"! A lot of people DO seem to freak out about the complex models being from one sheet with no cuts/glue. I wouldn't be too hard on her. She just made a human error.
Even with my fairly simple models, people are amazed. It's hard for them to believe because there is a special "magic" to it. That's what got me hooked as a child. The astonishment that amazing creations would be folded from something so simple and flat. Talk about thinking outside of the box!
So, yes.. origamians will continue to hear "I can't believe it! You must have a lot of time on your hands! You really didn''t cut that paper? I could never do that!" etc." and probably hear it ten thousand times like this reporter. I wonder how many times they had to edit out her saying that. LOL
It's up to us to harness that initial excitement and hopefully encourage them to try it too. I take it as a compliment that they are appreciating the people in the world that have the talent to fold well.
Go origami! (waves pom poms)
It takes all kinds of folks to make the world go around doesn't it?
Ignorant of origami

While I agree with the general idea of what you are saying, there has to be a cutoff point. This news broadcast had a lot of problems-Between the Folds was much better put-together.pandaraoke wrote:Looked like similar stuff about Lang in the PBS special "Between the Folds". Along the same lines, she didn't just make a human error, everyone involved in putting that segment (including her) made a lot of errors. Simple fact-checking did not happen, the long pauses, etc. It would be acceptable (perhaps) for a high school or college project, but certainly not for a professional news station.pandaraoke wrote:She just made a human error.
