Have you ever invented your own origami figure?

Post by Gerardo »

I'm working on a project dedicated to showing and teaching new origami designs and their creators.

You would help me A LOT if you know someone that has designed his or her own figure and wants to show and teach it to origami practitioners worldwide. If you do, and you want to help me, let me know through this thread.

Hopefully this project will help give more light to new figures and creators.

Thank you !

Well Gerardo,, this forum is filled with people who design their own Origami, hell, even I have a few designs and I'm only an intermediate folder to say the least. For some it's a necessity to design their own stuff just to be able to break away from the existing stuff that floats around in books and websites. The whole key of origami is to keep designing because this keeps it interesting and new. And for learning it to others that's why crease patterns, diagrams and videos exist. We have members here from around the globe and it's not always possible to teach everything first hand so that's were the CP, diagram, video thing comes in handy.

It's a space friendly with new figures, new folders and new designers. We can help more origami curious start folding. You contribute to the project by wanting to teach your easiest design to new folders and, by the same token, our figure gets to be shared among more people.

I hope there's a few volunteers in this forum that would like to help and teach... and say so here.

What do you think?

I really can't imagine how this project could work :?
In theory it is a very interesting project, but in practice?

Could you explain how do you think to manage it?

Your reply makes me to suppose you have no idea on how develop your project... but anyway, for example, how do you think you can manage the meeting between author and people wishing to learn?
Folders of this comunity are spread quite all over world. :?

Thanks for the question O.G. :). I was thinking that that friendly space would have to be virtual and electronic; you can learn new things in virtual and electronic spaces :).

I'm really glad you're curious about the project. So what's your easiest origami design? I hope you decide to help :D.

Iron out some more details, Gerardo. It sounds like you don't really know exactly how this is going to work, but rather just have a general idea of what you want to do. Is it going to be taught by video conference? If so, wouldn't a simple instructional video be just as good? If so, wouldn't traditional diagrams be a viable alternative? A video and diagrams would have the added bonus of being accessible to everyone at any time, as opposed to a physical/virtual meeting, where people are likely in multiple time zones on different schedules. The teacher would be able to (in theory) help out others if the instruction was going on in real time, but the teacher would have to single out the learner's video feed (if done virtually) somehow and take time to help him out. Why not put effort instead into encouraging designers to create diagrams?

We're on the same track. A great way to teach how to fold your figure is through the different file types that Internet supports. That mean's it could be through a video, also diagrams, but it shouldn't be limited to only those two options. The important thing would be to be able to teach your steps in a comprehensible way to new folders; through which kind of file and how would be up to each designer.

So to make it a bit more clear, I'm looking for volunteers interested in teaching the steps for folding your own design through any kind of file supported through the Internet.

Sorry for not being a bit more clear before.

Well, there are so, so many free (legal!) diagrams and videos available on the internet- with more being uploaded every day.

What is it that makes your project so different?

Also, what other file types? We have word/pdf document formats and also video formats. What more are there that could clearly show an origami diagram clearly, efficiently, and comprehensibly? (I might add that diagrams in .pdf format can be printed out into a physical copy while videos cannot.)

Could you please direct me to sites dedicated to posting everyone's origami instructions?... thanks :D

I'd say slideshows and presentations are also really good options for teaching how to fold a figure, to give an example. Having different options to teach usually is a plus :).

JonnyCakes: I hope you think what design you could teach. It'll be perfect you share it through diagrams in a Doc or PDF File :D.
