answer them " I took a piece of paper, folded it a lot , and this happened."
The story about the russian sub reminds me of a british sub I had. She kept telling me stuff but I couldn't concentrate because of her accent. In the movies you hear these accents but in real life they make me crack up

Most of the people say something like this: "Wow, its amazing" or "Did you fold that?"
but one person at the universitiy said: "Thats cool. I also want to have one. fold it. i want to have it tomorrow."
since then I haven't foldet anything for someone elese except for they know how hard it is to fold these models.

I always say, with a mystical look on my face, "Maaaaaaaaagic". Yeah, I say it slowly and mysteriously like that. Most people my age will become frustrated, but people younger than me give me a look of complete awe.

A lot of people I know will just say something like "that's awesome." My girlfriend is so used to my origami creations that she barely cares anymore. I'll show her a new design that I've spent hours developing and she'll just say "that's nice." So I'll show her the finished model next to a picture of the real thing so she can see how similar it looks and she says "yeah, I see." But I guess the greatest reaction I ever got was when another friend said "your origami orchid looks better than my real orchid." : )

Oh, and I also tried folding origami in class under the desk, but my professor thought I was texting, HAHA. Yeah right.

I've had that problem too! Only, this have to be more comical! We had a stand-in teacher, and since I was finished, as was all my friends, we got a free lesson. But when I stood at my locker, thinking of what I should fold, and what colour of paper to use (I have a small package of Kami in my school locker), the teacher thought I was texting!

Which was even more fun to my friends, as I almost never text. Like in, my last phone number got blocked, because I hadn't refilled for half a year! And I had about 60kr left! That's about 10 dollars! :O

If you've ever sat at the teacher's desk, you would know. Teachers can absolutely see it.

Funny story: One time I was sitting about 2/3 of the way towards the back in my religion and science class (only about 80 students I think). I was folding a mindless tessellation (my Centipede Tessellation if you're interested) to keep my hands busy while listening to a very interesting lecture. Anyhow, after class one of the professors came up to me and asked me about it. I replied "Oh yeah, you weren't supposed to see me…" She said, "Oh no, that's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen!" I folded quite a bit more in that class after that!

EDIT: A day ago i tried to teach my class mates how to fold the waterbomb tesselation. Lets just say 30 people were screaming at me for 45 minutes.....

This reminds me of a high school class about 15 years ago when the teacher got sick and we were all ushered into the main admin building under the principal's (in)direct supervision. It was a country town in Australia and origami was virtually unknown at that time (ie pre internet age). I was only doing a traditional crane and a few people were quite impressed so I started teaching them. Unfortunately stubby fingers and origami do not mix, and many golf ball size paper ball followed, together with people throwing tantrums.....

I have to admit that I find it somewhat amusing that you felt it necessary to tell us that they were women before telling us that they only understand or care about simple things that are brightly colored. Lol.

The things that people say to me that really agrivates me, are these:
"how many pieces"
"how did the glue not ruin your peoject"
"You have too much time on your hands"
"origami is for losers, like you"
"origami is ONLY the crane, you're just crincking the paper and hoping you get luky!"
"Origami isn't an art!"
"You need to get out more, all you do is fold crap" (yea the ancient dragon is crap)

"I could NEVER fold that" (we all have to start somewhere)

I have more that makes me want to shove a pice of paper in front of their face and say "Why don't you try!" or "do you think you can do better?"

any way, have fun folding, and don't forget, we all started somewhere, so will one of your frends, just keep showing off, and it will happen. Teach them little things, and They too will be masters.

One more comment that people make is:
"I don't have the patience to make that."

It gets on my nerves! You don't need hardley any patience!
A nice story I like to say if someone says that too me is:

-If I locked you in a room for 12 hours with no windows and the only door is the one I locked, and the only things in the room was a stack of paper, and an origami book, what would you rather do: sit and do nothing, or fold the paper?"

some actually rather sit and do nothing because they say, "Oh, I can't do it anyway."

Which do you think would take more patience?

Funniest trick to pull on non-folders!

Post by RollerCoasterBug »

Make a precrease for a hexa-tesselation, and tell them to count all of the squares. That may not be the funny part, It's when they ask where to look that gets you. They become upset, and get desprate. The longer you hold off on saying that there are none, the better it gets.

 I did this to someone today at school so they tried to jump me later. Lets just say he didn't do a very good job of it...

Well anyways I was converted to origami by my friend Tyler back when I (well we) were young enough to just be learning the crane (like 4th grade) and if I remember correctly the talking dog or something like that. I have long since passed his level of origami as he really didn't do much origami after heading to middle school.

As for the actual topic of this thread, the most annoying response I get after showing someone a model is "TEACH ME HOW TO DO THAT!!!!" I try and explain why they can't do it but they continue to insist and eventually I might show them...

This usually leads to them on the first step saying "OMG HOW TEH @&#*% DO YOU @#%$&ING FOLD IT IN HALF YOU @#%$#HOLE?!?!?!?!? YOU ARE A %@#$&ING FAIL TEACHER YOU @%#$#ER!!!!!!!" True story...

Sorry for the long post and btw this is my first post on this board.

Thanks,

Zrowny

Say it's illegal to teach them, that'll probably keep them away
