You know you're an origamist when...

Post by paperlion »

This thread popped into my head today, and I had to make it. :)

So...
You know you're an origamist when:

You see a geometrical pattern and immediately wonder,"Is it foldable?"
Your childhood idols were Robert Lang, Kamiya Satoshi, etc.
You borrow a piece of paper, and fold it unconsciously.
There are no dollar bills in your house. Only dollar dragons, squirrels, flowers, and cats.
You wake up in the night with an inexplicable urge to fold.
You have two blenders, one for food, the other for paper.
You wince upon seeing paper being fed into a shredder.
You know words in other languages, but they all refer to paper or folding.
Your tablecloth has a triangle grid on it.
When your dreams have paper-related themes.
"When I'm lying in my bed, I think about life and I think about death, and neither one particularly appeals to me"

You can't fall asleep because you are thinking of what to fold.

... you first think of a rose when hearing the word kawasaki.
... you've seen more mountains and valleys than any alpinist on this planet.
... you tear your steak because you think it's forbidden to cut it.
... you come back with a fodled box when somebody tells you he needs a fuse.
... somebody gives you a 10tsd dollar cheque and the first question that comes into your mind is what could be folded from it.
... you get angry when somebody tears a piece of paper.
... you need a tool for opening pockets and you are not a thief.

... you blow up the scissors-factory with a waterbomb.
... you've folded a crane before the napkin reached your face.
Art is about creation. It is about self-expression. It is giving form to something within you.

...you see an interesting and/or unusual organism somewhere and immediately rush home to see if anyone's done an origami version yet!

...When having a conversation, you make origami references, which people don't understand.

Your inlaws ask your husband what you want for your birthday and he answers "some origami book".
You think, "Come on, I'm not that predictable", but when you make your wish list for them, you realise that you are.

... you get mad when you see a shredder.
... you demonstrate against eatable paper.
... you wake up and instead of thinking "What am I going to do today?" you think "What am I going to fold today?"

-Your teacher scolds you for the 'rabbit ears' on your worksheets
-You examine nearly everything for its folding qualities
-When your teacher allows you to watch a movie, 'Between the Folds' comes to your mind.

Not to date myself, but...more than two decades ago, I was in high school and just starting to get into origami. I was so enamored with it that I took to folding under my desk in my more boring classes, particularly English. Unfortunately, the room the class was in was essentially cement brick with no wall coverings of any kind, so every tiny noise, like a piece of paper crinkling, was amplified and echoed around the room, so it wasn't hard to pinpoint what was making the noise and where it was coming from. The teacher became progressively more annoyed with it as the semester wore on, culminating when he returned a paper to me that he had very clearly wadded up very tightly, then unwadded, and wrote across the front in very large, red letters "DO NOT FOLD PAPER IN CLASS!!!"

To be fair, this is the same teacher who took a lot of points off of another paper I did for using a word he said didn't exist ("zeitgeist"), and hated me more or less forever after when I showed him the word in the dictionary...so it wasn't like I had a lot of respect for him anyway!

zeitgeist

In fact, "zeitgeist" is a world from german language and it means "spirit of time". Many scholars use this world in your papers.
