Try it with single layered Unryu. It works perfectly. I managed to do it with a 37x37 sheet, and it never really got too thick. If you use paper larger than what I used, you should get a splendid result (assuming you fold accurately).

Not sure, Joshua, but it's quite thin. I'm guessing it's somewhere between 30-50 g/m². I can try and measure it later, using a scale.

Hello all, I've been stuck for a few months now on step 59 of the model, and was wondering if I could get some help. I spent half an hour looking though this topic but didn't find any mention of this part. Here are pictures of what I have so far.

When I try to fold the edges in, it becomes impossible to do because I have to mirror the action on the opposite side as well as the middle part being forced to one side or the other. If I really try I can get it to look like this:

If there's anything I've done wrong, or something different I need to do, please let me know! Or if I missed someone else asking and getting an answer, a page number would be great!

Thanks!

That last picture looks correct to me. Are you having problems with latter steps?

Yes, I can't flatten the model any more than shown, and that makes the next step with the squash fold down impossible. Also, which side should that middle layer be trapped with, the tail or head?

Did you ever notice how the second picture looks like a space pope hat? XD

Ah i see what you did wrong. In your third picture, you see how the layers make a "W" shape? well there shouldnt be that middle flap. The layers should make a "V" shape. You did steps 51-57 incorrectly. Try them again.

Thanks, I thought it would be something with the middle flap. I'll see if I can just sink it, otherwise it's a lot of unfolding to retry them.

I folded it correctly the first time, but in the diagrams he states that "the center layers should also be folded like 49-56," and I thought he was talking about making a center flap in between the other two, not about the inner side of both main flaps.

Edit: Sinking it worked out just fine. I did some more searching and found a picture that showed me what I needed it to look like.

Unfortunately, where the middle prong of the W was, the extra folds created a lot of stress and pretty much every point now has a tear in it, but I was able to squash the top down for step 60 to create separate tips. I'll post later when I finish or if I get stuck somewhere, thanks again!

After finishing steps 49-56, its no longer a "W", that middle flap becomes "attached" to the back layer, so its a "V" now.

Im curious how you did step 83 then? because you can't fold it over if there is that middle pleat in the way.
