interesting problem. Inkscape is an SVG software i.e. Scalable Vector Graphics Software. Maybe your system doesn't support the software?

It opens in X11. X11 is not some stupid program, but an environment that will allow you to run some programs, such as Inkscape. It does take a couple minutes for it to open. Other than that info I can't say much. Maybe Inkscape has a troubleshooting/FAQ guide online that can help.

Phillip, are you using linux? If so, on the distro that you're using there should be an official forum and a bug report you can use either one to trouble shoot the problem. :)

Inkscape

Post by Shanti »

Hi everyone :)
I also have a problem opening Inkscape. Every time I try to open it I get an error message:

Phillip, did you find a solution to your problem?
Has anyone had the same problem opening Inkscape? Can anyone help me please?

Shanti I had the same problem, so I decided to use the Portable Version of Inkscape instead. It works for me, even though it decides to lag and crash after a couple of hours. So if the Portable Version works for you too, keep in mind to save once in a while, if the same problems occur for you too :)

Portable version is basically that the program is located in one map. This way you can put it on a USB flash drive for example and run it from the USB.

Can also be found on this page: http://inkscape.org/download/?lang=en

SVG: Another advantage of Inkscape

Post by Dybkjær »

Another great thing about Inkscape is that it uses SVG. This format is a standard (http://www.w3.org/Graphics/SVG/) supported by most modern browsers though not all features are supported by all browsers.

See e.g. http://papirfoldning.dk/images/projekte ... e_03_d.svg
which is linked to from http://papirfoldning.dk/da/projekter/drager01.html

natively viewable in IE8, 9, Opera, Safari, Chrome, Firefox.
Together with being vector graphics this means it deploys and scales very well.
I strongly consider using it for web publication instead of formats like pdf or png.

I will have a look. Computers are so complicated for me that I don't understand what you are saying because of the terminology that I am not familiar with.
I am still learning Inkscape and haven't been able to draw my diagrams yet :( (I can draw a sqaure but after that I'm stuck :) )
