Take a look in the "Preferred Folding Material" thread, located a couple of threads above this one.

first of all, a little patience is required. this board is not super busy--the only thread that moves at a fair pace is "what have you folded lately" in the gallery section.TimelyToga wrote:okie dokie, I did that, 3 days ago, and still no answers :/
secondly, you could always try just leafing through the individual topics of the subject you are interested in. i.e., you could read through some of the ancient dragon thread. i think 50% of my posts in that thread say the best way to practice that model is by taping together 4 squares of kami. i understand the thread has become unwieldy, but at a minimum asking you to go through ~ 10 pages is not that much.
if you don't have any kami, a good rule of thumb for any origami model from the newer schools of thought (i.e., complex) is paper that is large, thin, and strong. this can be difficult to come by, depending. kami, for instance, is too thick for most complex models (however it is suitable to use as practice, as i outlined). there are numerous sites where one can buy kami, i'm not going to relist them all. a newer alternative to kami is tant, which is thicker than kami but is strong enough to withstand wet-folding for finishing (i.e., thick points that would otherwise splay can be moistened, clamped together, and allowed to dry). i have recently again listed multiple places to get tant in the USA, which includes kimscrane, paperjade, and fineartstore.
nicolas terry origami-shop sells rolls of a 50 cm foil, which is useful for complex models. the stuff is still very thick. i also happen to think that 50 cm is a little too small for the ancient dragon (the final details on the head will get very small and thick and annoying to manipulate). he also sells large sheets of japanese foil. you can use the same "trick" as with kami and tape together 4 sheets to get a 70 cm sheet. fineartstore also sells 30.8 cm japanese foil.
the "what paper you have bought recently?" is only 4 pages long and lists multiple sources where people purchase.

I thank you bethnor very much! I guess I was being rather impatient but it appeared the topic was much more active than it was.
Also I have leafed through the topics that you suggested (another big thank you) and I tried making a piece of tissue foil and I couldn't get a nice square. But i think I may go for the foil roll from nick terry. I was actually looking through website earlier today!

I referred you to the topic thinking (stupidly) that you would look through the posts in it, wherein you would find dozens of posts detailing where to obtain virtually any type of paper suited to origami

though i used to be adamant that people leaf through threads, as requested in the forum rules, i do confess that some threads (such as the ancient dragon thread) have become somewhat unwieldy. some of the threads are so old that the original photo-hints are defunct. i also post at TWOP occasionally, which is probably the most stringently moderated board i've ever been to, and there's a "15 page" rule whereby posters are requested to go through at least the last 15 pages of a thread before posting a question. perhaps this board can adopt something similar (i.e., the OP should go through the last 15 pages of the thread you referred them to, and should come back if a satisfactory ansewr is not found therein).
I think that most of the problem is in how featureless this extremely outdated forum software is. Seriously, not only can we not search through threads, we can't even select print/download the thread to just use another program (like word) to search the thread.
This forum badly needs an update.
Also that paper thread that everyone always points to is NOT USEFUL. Most of the posts on there are simply not helpful, and some of them would be if they weren't so out of date.
Another painfully out of date thread is Wolf's FAQ. It needs to be updated. On top of that we need a concise paper rec FAQ thread that we point posters to instead of that terrible monstrosity (I mean the paper thread not the FAQ).

You are welcome to write a good paper FAQ, I'll be happy to make it sticky.
About the Forum Update:
It is true that this Forum software is outdated and would need an update badly, but the only person who can do this is the Forum owner who not only pays for the webspace (Thank you Saj!), but also is the only one having access to the underlying database of the Forum. Unfortunately he seems to be very busy.

Oh btw at Paper Jade you can buy large sheets of chitose (if you live in the US then it is faster than waiting on a shipment from France, where origami shop is). Also if you don't want to wait try florist foil or masking paper if you live in the US. Try thin kraft or wrapping paper if you live in Europe.

Just a small warning on that chitose: Even after sizing, the paper is still a bit soft...meaning increased fraying of some edges...

good stuff...I started the dragon with a large piece of paper that i found on an easel at the house and it seems to be going pretty well. Some of the beginning creases are starting to rub out and it doesn't to reverse fold, but at least it is quite large. Question. Is that florist foil plasticy?
Also I saw a big roll of rice paper on amazon for relatively cheap. I was wondering whether anyone has tried folding with it and whether it rips easily?[/b]
