Lang's Finch from "The Fold"

i was thinking about getting a subscription just to try this, but eyeballing it, it really looks close to his songbird I from ODS.

also, i have to confess, though the final result usually looks good, i usually detest lang's folding sequences.

Bethnor, I have the same feeling....I have ODS, but folding sequence has driven me out of this book.

They're not the same model. In Lang's opus numbers:
Finch = Opus 439
Songbird 1 = Opus 408
Songbird 2 = Opus 361

i apologize, as i was not clear. i don't believe that they're the same model, but the head, claw, and tail structure looks grossly the same, and i imagine the folding sequence is much the same as for the songbird I. the main difference is the wing structure, i.e., it appears to me a variation of songbird I. as frumious points out, that the pics are all so far away may be effecting my perception.

Here's my shot at it:

I like the pleated tail and the fullness of the body. I had a hard time with the shoulder crimp - the model is 3D at that point so it calls for a curved crimp that I just couldn't do well.

Songbird 1 looks different to me. It has real toes and lacks the tail pleats, at the least. I'll have to fold it and compare.

now that i can see a close up, i can see the finch doesn't have individual talons. feels funny calling a small bird's toes talons...

My fold of Songbird 1:

Differences:
- S1 is a bird base with grafted toes, Finch base is designed for the 3D body and pleated tail IMHO
- S1 has toes, Finch does not. leg shaping is very similar otherwise
- S1 wings are just crimped out of the tail flap. Finch has individual wing flaps although they are not completely loose
- heads are shaped similarly, but the beaks themselves are different
- S1 spent most of the plan folding out those toes. Finch spent more time on precreasing and pleating the tail.

If you need more resolution, Flickr has both of them a bit larger.
