Babirusa 1.2


Designed and folded by Quentin Trollip from an uncut square of white tissue on brown washi.
It is an update on the previous version, the tusks are color-changed, the lower tusks ars less layered and thus thinner, the upper tusks are longer and there is an illusion of a lower jaw..
He's a bit front-heavy, so I made him into a grazing position.

Nice. What would you say the ratio of paper to model size is? Just wondering how much paper goes to the design of the head.

The length of the final model is 39% of that of the side of the starting square.
Keep in mind that it is fully closed-back, so less efficient than one with an open back.

Bandersnatch - those models are awesome! What kind/size paper did you use for the Loggerhead Turtle?

I used a 16 inch sheet of the stuff that Nicolas Terry sells as "Tissue Foil." The turtle is about 7 or 8 inches from tip to tip.

If I remember correctly, I purchased this sheet of foil in 2005 in Tokyo at an art store called Ito-ya.

what does closed back mean?

When you design an animal model, at least in Robert Lang's words, most of the time you have to choose between open back or open belly. Open back usually are simpler models, and vice-versa. As Quentin said, closed back is less efficient, but I personally think it looks better.

I am sort of in a folding block. What model should I fold? Assume that I have all the books, because I want to hear the good ones! Please no crease patterns! Thanks a lot in advance!

Horse by John Montroll, from Mythological Creatures and the Chinese Zodiac in Origami.

A coworker requested a "horse," and among my diagrams I've got Montroll (Sculptures,) Lang Alamo Stallion, Yoshino, Weiss triangle horse, Komatsu, and this one.
I went for this one as a balance between what looks good and how long it takes me, considering she'd be happy with just about anything. I'm happy I did this one though, it turns out I was able to do some nice shaping that's not in the original diagrams and come out with a rather pleasant form that's just right for gift purposes. It looks better in 3-D, but I guess that goes for most origami these days.
