if you can't do it sara adams might tell you cos i know she's done it

Re: Lang's Koi with scales
I started out with about a 19" square sheet, used 1/8" size pleats for the scales (that was about as small as I could comfortably fold), and 3/8" spacing between the pleats, thus unfolded there would be 5/8" between the center of each scale or 1/4" of extra paper required for each scale to be added to the sheet. In my case I think I did a 20x20 pattern, so unfolded the square section of the cp that had the scales was 12.5" + the paper outside the scales for the head and fins and such gives an estimate of the paper size required.
I started the pleats in the center of the sheet, folded all of them and the scales first, I then mc'd the pleats that extended past the scales (just to keep them from opening up while folding the rest of it), measured the scale pattern square and using the cp figured out how big to cut the paper (yeah I cheated, mainly because I was unsure how consistent I could control the pleat spacing and I really didn't want to fold it again).
I also folded one the same size without scales (i.e. using the 'finished' size with the scales folded) first to get an idea of where they would end up, even with that I made a mistake taking the scales too far into the head (i.e. the sheet should have been a bit bigger than what I cut it to). Which is why the finished head shape is a bit different than how it should have been. Not enough of a problem to make me want to refold it anytime soon, but far from perfect.

polistes: I had the same problem too, so a while back I emailed Lang about it and he responded with an image from the second version of Origami Design Secrets that has all the dimensions for it. The only thing was that it is in centimeters, and all my long rulers are only in inches
mummykicks: your dimensions are close about the scales, but did you mean 12.5 cm for the paper outside the scales? Because if you didn't, then the non-scale part would be twice as large as Lang recommended. Here are the dimensions that Lang gave me:
12.2 cm for the head, 0.2 cm for each pleat, 1.2 cm between each pleat, 12.0 cm for the tail, with 20 pleats per side
Although I will be using a slightly larger dimension for the pleat width, something more like 0.3 cm, because I am folding the paper around the edge of a sheet of acrylic to make sure the folds are parallel (because I had trouble keeping them parallel when I was just drawing them in)
