Yeah, exactly! My classmates always tell me that!I've been told:
"How did you do that!?" and
"You're too good!"
I once asked a friend why he didn't do origami, and I got a fairly negative response:
"Because I have a life.
Hmph...

My art teacher when I was 11 was Alfredo Giunta, one of the most famous origamist in Italy, i suppose he is famous also out of Italy.
He inspired me a lot in this activity, I started folding thanks to him.
While we were drawing/painting in class he was always folding!
When I aksed him to show us his models, the girls in our class went completely mad and everyone of them asked "plz make me one of this, one of that..ooooh so cute!!"
He simply ignored them...lol....that's true you can't force an artist to fold what is not feeling at the moment.
A friend of mine asked me if he could unfold my scorpion by Giunta because he didn't believe it was only one piece of paper...he was so surprised lol...I refolded it and i gave to him as a gift.

I've got a reaction from my tutor.
I said:"Could you get me a square piece of paper, sir?"
He said:"Why?"
Someone else said:"He's an origamist!
"
My tutor:"So you fold paper?"
Me:"Yes"
Tutor:"So you WASTE paper?"
Me:"No"
Tutor:"So you'd cut down a tree?"
Me:"Yes"
Tutor:"And you like nature?!"
Me:"Yes"
Everyone was laughing like mad,I just sat there with my pokerface

Art is about creation. It is about self-expression. It is giving form to something within you.

I started a test with kids and origami. (I work at a summer camp, so I'm selling my origami.) I told about half the children that I folded the models, and their behavior towards the origami was not as impressive than when I lied to them that I didn't fold the origami. The first set of kids kind of liked it, and bashed on it constantly. The second group of people semed more interested , and studied the models a little more carefully, that's when more of my sales occured. It was in a way, very strange.

Most of the time my friends just say "oh that's cool" and leave.

Well apparently to the kids in my school, if you enjoyed art more than sports, you were a 'faggot'.....

Re: Non-Folders Reactions to Your Origami
Yeah same here, but more subtle. It was either
1) you are good at sports
reaction: "Wow, your good! I wish I could be you!"
2) you like arts more
reaction: "okay. *poker face*"

"Have you had addiction counselling yet?"
"Can you make me one? "
"What's that?"
Quotes from a certain unpleasant form mate:
"Have you been stealing that paper from the library?" (Me) "oh, from the box saying scrap paper please help yourself that the librarians encourage you to take some from when you go past?"
"can i rip it?" "What are you making?" "Origami's pointless." "Can you show me how to? "
(teacher) "Can you make me a flower?" "i tried that once"
(Friends) "is that orugarmi?"

Re: Non-Folders Reactions to Your Origami
Adults: I did those when I was little!
I once was folding a frog out of a bus ticket I found on the floor, but my friend wanted me to make a boat, so I pulled out the tesselation inside the back of eric gjerde's book(the one with the waves and the boat).THEN my teacher literally POUNCED on me and tore them both up
Friends: Wow, ewww(insects), teach me how to do that, make me one, how do you do that, how long did it take you,etc

Funnily enough, only my art and maths teachers have ever ripped any of mine up.
