Designing Origami
Hello People of this forum. I just want to ask, how would an intermediate level folder like me start to design simple models and slowly advance into more complex ones? Thank you, all.

Re: Designing Origami
Most people here would tell you to read "Origami Design Secrets" written by Robert Lang. This will give you a lot of technical insight on how designing works. I've read a little bit in the book but when you're just starting it might be a overwhelming amount of information. I would suggest to start with folding simple bases and start adding grafts, changing a reference point and see what happens to the end result.
I started with the "rat" by Eric Joisel, changed the reference at the start, and see the result, larger head, shorter front legs but larger hind legs. I can also recommend the Book "safari" origami by Lionel Albertino. He has a lot of different yet not to complicated bases that are easily modified. Start by making a graft on the diagonal and then keep folding the diagram and see if it works, If it does you'll now be able to add horns to a model, or wings, etc. It's just a matter of time until you start recognizing different folding methods. Also keep folding models by other people. I keep finding out new ways to fold a simple triangle flap that I had not thought of myself.
It will also depend on what kind folding or subjects you like to fold. I know there are people here on the forum that start with drawing a crease pattern or they are into boxpleating and start with folding a big grid. Since I personally don't like folding a big grid and (still..) can't work from crease pattern I just like to fold a bunch of tests, before everything is in the right place and at the same length.
The last page of my gallery (See Signature below) shows a little bit on how this progress works for a cat I'm designing.
Hope this helps!
