Origram - an origami simulator software

Post by spolioz »

Hi,

As some of you might already have heard if they came to the origami convention in Lyon, some students are making a project called Origram. You can find the related website here: http://perso.ens-lyon.fr/fabrice.mouhartem/origram/ (please note that the website is still under construction though).

The goal is to produce a software allowing the construction of an origami diagram based on inputs from a user - whether it is a creator, or a total beginner in origami.

Basically, the user inputs the folding he wants to realize, and then the software automatically computes the folding and the diagram step. Then you advance to the next step, input where you want to fold the paper, and so on.

Besides showing you this project, the goal of this thread is also to allow you to criticize - and give ideas - in order to make the most out of this project.

As of the time of writing, here are our current objectives:
- A clean and usable interface, with a full access to what we could call "folding help" (so you could, for example, start with an already existing basis, or with a full 32*32 grid).
- The generation of a understandable and pleasing to watch diagram.
- A easy-to-use software: everyone who wants to create a diagram should be able to use it, without having a PhD in computer science.
- Eventually: a diagram editor, allowing to manually edit the generated diagram in order to add annotations in case the diagram isn't complete.

Feel free to comment and criticize, every feedback is good to hear. Please note that you're also free to contribute if you want to - check the website for further information - , whether it is for the developping part or the testing part - which will take place in a few months.

Thanks for taking the time to read and comment if you do,
the team origram.

Hmm...looks great! Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with how to download it. I click on the download tab, and it gives me a link to something called a "git"? When I go to that link, it has different folders and files, and when you click it, you get some lines of code?

Ok. Thanks Phillip.

My brother's name is Philip, with 1 l. It's a cool name, no matter how many l's you use.

We're still only at the beginning of the project, so there isn't any working version yet - so no source basically. I only advertised it to have feedback on expected realizations, but I'll come back with a working beta of our software as soon as we have one.
