Monthly Folding Challenge - October 2007

Post by alisher_navoi »

For October, the Subject will be focused on Combination Folding.

This will involve at least 2 subjects folded from 1 piece of paper. These could include, a man playing an instrument, man riding a motorbike, a scene involving a person with an object, a hand holding something, a monkey on a tree, merry go round, what ever you choose is up to you as long as it contains two (or more) subjects folded from the same piece paper.

Now the rules:
1) As mentioned only 1 piece of paper must be used- no cutting nor gluing.
2) The shape of the paper is up to you, but I encourage squares and rectangles.
3) The execution must be creatively your own work.
4) Marks are awarded based on Originality, Detail & Neatness. Bonus marks will also be given for models that utilises colour changing.

Some tips:
- Try to look for subjects in magazines, media, toy shops for inspiration
- Folders like Neal Elias, Fred Rohm, Marc Kirschenbaum, Jeremy Shafer, Martin Wall provide an interesting choice of ideas on the subject. Good luck!

Also noting the winner for September was (Frucco), which means he will be selecting the Subject for November and judging October's Folding Challenge winner. Congratulations!

Here is a simple idea of what is expected.

Soccer Player
Image

Folded from 1 30cm square of tissue foil. See?? Its very dusty, has been in the cupboard long time ago. The entire design is based on box pleated. Everything connects, the figure, base and the ball.

Hands Playing Guitar

Folded from 1 1X2 Rectangle of tissue foil. Created in 2001

Nice theme!

I really like that soccer player. I think I may give it a try too, and make a very poseable version.

Designed this almost three years ago, don't know if it counts...

I was actually trying out the tips Jason Ku gave on this forum for the phoenix tail during a class in university, and decided to try something different. It's basically a kite fold with many sinks in and out for the snake, and then some box-pleating with modification for the 22.5 degrees -> box pleating transition.

Should be able to make the snake a different color, though I always thought the snake should have a color-changed apple in his mouth, and the man should be a woman. But folding a woman from origami is beyond me :?.

I'll fold it from better paper if I have time.

This is one of my favorite topics in origami. Over the years I've come up with a few successful pieces. One of my first was the Wraith on Wings at http://oriworld.joi.com.br back in 2001 or 2002.

Here are photos of some of them:

Image
Ring of Fire
Created and folded in 2006. From a single uncut 25 cm square of Japanese foil.

Image
Frog on a Lily Pad
Created and folded in 2003. I displayed this at PCOC 03. From a single uncut 12 inch square of tissue-foil.

Image
Crane with Cranes on Wings
Created and folded in 2007. From a single uncut square of glassine paper.

Image
Yacht on a Lake with its Wake Following

Created and folded in 2006 for the 2006 OUSA Convention challenge of a sailing ship. I never made it to the convention though. It's based on a sea serpent I did in 2003. From a 15 cm square of Japanese foil, so that there would be a reflection of the yacht.

Several months ago I created this Perseus holding Medusa's head, folded from a 22cm square of Mulberry paper, sword could theoretically be colour-changed.

Image

I should still have the CP lying around somewhere... might add it to my blog later on...
So long and keep folding ^_^

Wow, there's alot of good stuff so far and October isn't even in full swing yet.
I didn't get time to fold my September model, but got lucky with this challenge as my latest design will fall in this category (I hope). The basic design for the base is done and it should work. I will start folding tonight and hopefully post it the weekend (if it's worth while that is)!
