No printer paper definitely isn't a good choice. For your first try I'd recommend a strip of 16cm x 160cm of foilpaper. You can get rolls of foilpaper in Nicolas Terry's shop, just ask him about it: http://origami-shop.com

You could try wrapping paper. It will fold it, but it won't hold it's shape in the end without some help. I used wrapping paper for Lang's Cuckoo Clock in The Complete Book of Origami, but I needed to use some glue (sacrilegious, I know!) to have it keep it's shape in the end.

The benefits of wrapping paper is that it's cheap and very long. Finding long paper is a problem - a good artist would find better paper and tape/glue pieces of that paper together to make a larger rectangle to start.
