LOL Im not too shabby with a bird base and my basic starting folds for serpentine objects. but thats considering the short time if done origami other then paper airplanes
i used the same starting folds to make a snake, a simple sea serpent (later modifyed by Kafar) and a slug. then from a bird base ive made a bird (species unknown) and a wyvern(type of dragon) other bases havent gottonanything yet
thanks for the tips:)

YOu should put that in the E-book with diagrams. it would help me see some uses for the bird base in action

Designing using existing bases is something I try to put into my work a lot. I don't think they should be abandoned so quickly: there are so many possibilities simply by changing proportions, or adding a little something. My Sandpiper bird is made from a bird base with strip grafts. If you're interested in folding it, the Crease Pattern is on my page.

Also my crow is made from a waterbomb base. Of course it certainly as simple as that but, I was glad that I could use the base as a starting point:

This is such a great topic. I'm glad you opened it up! I hope that this will shed some light on this mysterious subject. Good luck with your folding. Cheers!

If you really want to know how to make a common base into something better look at diagrams and take notes on how they split points and create flaps. Unfold structures to see how they work. The bee by Marc Kirscehbaum was made out of a bird base with major modifications. Look at that. Also like others have said mess around with the paper. You might get something useful.
Whenever I do complex Origami I get this sinking feeling.
