Monthly Folding Challenge - November 2009

Post by akugami »

"Folding Japan - legend and myth"

as a long term Japan friend I want to invite you to fold something special out of a beautiful and interesting culture.
Some keywords to choose from may be

- tengu
- daruma
- oni
- shishi
- kappa
- raiden/raijin
- tatsu
- inari
- samurai
- geisha.

Those who know and appreciate the impressive origami masks by Tomoko Fuse may also want to fold an own interpretation of traditional theatre characters.

Rules:

- fold from a square without any cuts and glue - if possible just one piece of paper
- find a new and own design - something special for this challenge
- give a reference picture of a model you take inspiration from
- no drawing or painting - just paper.

Ha, I'm out for this one. The only word that rings a bell for me is Samurai and I'm not gonna fold a human again this month.

no fear, anna! "samurai" doesn't mean a whole human but for instance a mask, a helmet or may be the s-h-beetle if you have a faible for insects ...

i'm still working on my little geisha model - with being not qualified for the japan challenge, too, i post the new version just as an example ...

This sounds great-a lot of exotic subjects to choose from. Can you say Amaterasu

Got an idea, lets hope I can make it work. It is an idea I already have in mind for a while, but I got 0% experience in designing (already asked for ODS for Christmas, can't wait for that. :D )

Anyways: Good luck everyone, may it be a fruitful month yet again :D

Haha, you could always fold a square in half :). Then, you would have rectangle models out of a square, as long as the rectangle model was 2/1. Of course, it would be bulky, so you would need thin paper, but....

Sounds like a great challange! I'll have to get to work on some designs :).

Why do Vietnamese folders like rectangles so much? Rectangles are bad for you!
I've fallen down, and I can't get up.

just take a piece of paper, fold it in half and MC it down, no one can say you used a rectangle

I don't think that's allowed, though.

Why not? That would still be from a square. I think if rectangles work for you, then use them-unless it is against the rules like in a challenge like this.

Vietnamese like rectangles and box-pleating. Japanese like squares!
