Snapology

Post by dren0ma »

i've been looking here in the forums, and it seems there are only a few posts about snapology models.. maybe if we can post all Snapology related stuff here for anyone interested (me!) that would be great.. can anyone share thoughts on how to construct certain designs, how many strips are needed, what polygons, etc.?

like how many strips are needed here,

or this one from gregorigami.com site:

no nothing like that, it is modular origami using strips(rectangles) instead of squares, that you "snap" together.. there are a few tutorials on the web on how to assemble them together, but very few instructions on how to make a certain design like the ones above..

here is an instructable that i found on the web that explains it

They look like larger versions of the Flexiball by Jorge Pardo. Jo Nakashima has a tutorial for that one and it's 60 units: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=knMEBSXM6WU

It's made out of squares. but it's the same general principle with locking the units into shape.

I don't think you'll find many tutorials on it, as not many people know about it (including me XD ) Good luck though! :)

Easy answer: to find the number of units required, just count the number of units in the photo... Or you could figure it out with math

Or you could be lazy and cheat: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archimedean_solid

But really, the whole point of this sort of modular is that once you know the basic folding method it should be possible to construct any shape. That's why there aren't further instructions-- you should be able to figure it out for yourself.

yes but for those who like to plan beforehand (how many strips needed, etc so they wont run out of paper), it would be very helpful...

i think anyone would be lost trying to count this by photo alone :D

Actually, a quick look at that shows it to be a 5-frequency icosahedron. 360 smaller triangles (18 per face and 20 faces).

I do snapology models, Ive been doing them from a few years, I've completed many models few with over 3000 pieces, thw thing to know is you need paper strips and connectors, there is a difference between knotology and snapology though both are made using strips, knotology includes knotting paper strips and snapology includes joining them.
