Good Gift for a Math Teacher?

Post by chesscuber98 »

My Math teacher is leaving next week, and I wanted to fold something as a farewell gift. Right now all I can think of is a tessellation. Can somebody drop a suggestion?

A tessellation would be a good idea.

A math teacher could also like a geometric design, such as a recursive model, a modular or one of the many geometric models made from one sheet such as the many stars, boxes, polyhedra, etc.

Thanks for the quick reply! Do you have any specific model in mind? Also keeping in mind that it should be easy to transport.

That depends a lot on what books you have access to. So look for those topics in the books and online pages you regularly access.

A gold omega star (or 3) is a good present. Gold to show that it is for excellence. Also the omega star is a stellated rhombic dodecahedron which should help impress your teacher. A good size of paper to use is 9cm by 9cm.

I really like the models by Dasa Severova:
ImageStar Mathilda by Dasa Severova, auf Flickr
and
ImageSpiral of life by Dasa Severova, auf Flickr
but generally speaking, i think every geometric model, be it a star, a tessellation or even a modular model should fit the occasion. especially 3-dimensional origami is complex mathematics. I prefer those recursive models i showed above (as a math-student myself) but this may differ for everyone.

Diagrams for both models are drawn, not sure how good they are avaiable though, got both of them through german convention books

Chris Palmer's Flower Tower?
There's a tutorial for it on Jeremy Shafer's Youtube channel.

FIT by Tom Hull.

Stuning on sight and loaded with a ton of concept (mathematics).

There is no better present for a mathematician.

Or if you are skilled enough, Annapurna or Chomolungma by Robert J. Lang.

Both share the same concept behind the FIT.
Pobody's nerfect.

Thank you for the suggestions guys!
I have done the Flower Tower a few times before, so i can maybe try that.
@Froy, although I love your suggestions, I doubt that a polyhedron can fit in a suitcase without getting utterly trashed, so I think I'll stick to flat folding models ( :( )
