Best way to glue two big sheets?

Hey guys,

I want to glue together two big sheets of around 4 x 4 feet. I'm thinking I can encounter different problems: applying the glue might take too long so the first area where I applied might start drying before placing the other sheet, I might err by a degree when placing the second sheet causing a big displacement, or I might end up with bubbles between both sheets if the glue isn't even or it's too humid or I don't press them both in an even way. Know what I mean?

So what's the best way to glue together two big sheets? Also, I'm wondering if spray adhesive is the best option. It should be a lot faster to apply. What do you think?

Be prepared to cut it to a square slightly smaller than the original 4ft. Also, spray the glue onto one sheet, and then slowly unroll the second sheet on top of it.

Have any of you used spray adhesive? What comments do you have?

Thank you abnyc. The idea of unrolling one of the sheets is really good :).

I can't cut anything from the paper after I glue them together. Do any of you have any ideas for placing straight the second sheet over the one with glue?

Has no one tried a spray adhesive ?

It's pretty much impossible to align two 4-foot sheets perfectly, so you really don't have a choice on the trimming.

As for spray glue, I use Scotch "spray mount" repositionable adhesive, which takes a few moments to fully set. Helps avoid wrinkles.

Have you ever tried it?

If not, you'll never find easy questions. A method useful for some people maybe will not be for you.

You have to try it, not just think about it.

Also, have you ever considered the model you will be folding? You may use tape if the taped edges don't show up in the final model.

abnyc, thanks! Do you have any other recommendations about using spray adhesive? I bought a chinese brand called SK-100. I tried a bit in a very small piece and it looks pretty good.

Froy, thanks. I'm purchasing everything I need to be prepared, and I get what you mean about trying, but I also want to prevent some rookie mistakes. I hate messing up good sheets!

Just that the spray glue that dries slower makes it a lot easier. I don't know if your brand is that kind, but it would probably be worth finding some considering the scale of your project and your concerns about precision. It helps to be able to re-orient the angle you've placed the second sheet at, all the more with bigger paper, since angles widen with length.

I've used spray adhesive, and I'd suggest something similar to what abnyc suggested, but make sure to anchor down all of the corners of the bottom sheet, then in one way or another fasten two of the top sheet's corners before spraying. I never used glue for anything this big, so I can't offer advice about laying the top down, though it might be helpful to have a friend come over for a bit if you can't find something suitable to roll the top layer

Thank you guys, those are great ideas! I'll be using double-sided tape to stick the bottom paper to the floor while I glue them both together :).

It's for the Shopping Bag. I'm planning on folding it extra big :).

I see now what are you trying to do.

I'd do this:

Tape one sheet to the floor. Tape the other sheet on the top. Tape only on the corners. This way you can adjust the aligning (but there is no way you will avoid trimming at the end)

You need spray adhesive, other methods will warp the paper making the aligning much worse.

Work from one corner at the time making sure that at the end you don't miss to glue the center of the paper.

Thanks Froy. Why do you suggest the procedure you described?

Because I use it very often to make double tissue, not just small squares, but the whole sheet.

If you don't want wrinkles it is the best way to do it. But yet, you may have some warping or a few wrinkles and some trimming at the end.

I also use this brand in specific:

it let you fix some errors till certain point but you need to be as precise as you can.

I would not go for glue or anything very liquid to glue 2 sheets that large.
