Origamists dedicated to creating practical models?

I love origami. During this six years I've been VERY passionate about creating original practical models, having them all a real use in everyday life. Although I have created a couple of models that are simply aesthetic.

Anyway... during all this time I don't think I've found anyone else that has also been particularly dedicated to creating original practical models. I gotta confess it sometimes feels a bit lonely, that's why I wanna reach out to others like me.

Do you know any others? Can you please give me their names? Might you also know how to contact them?

Thanks in advance :).

I can't list specific designer names off the top of my head, but I certainly have seen many different origami envelope designs (with various decorations) both online and in convention books. If boxes count as practical models, there are many of those, too.

Thanks mkosmul! You're right, different origamists have created envelopes and boxes. The thing is that I'm looking for creators that are passionate about different kinds of practical models, something more than just boxes and envelopes, like me. Know what I mean? So I am asking for names.

Something like this I presume?

It's very impressive :o! It would just have to also be practical for use. It's more like a tribute to footwear than wearable shoes. Know what I mean?

My most recent creations are:

They are intended for use and aren't limited to envelopes and boxes. That's where I sometimes feel lonely. Isn't there some other creator particularly dedicated to the creation of that kind of models?

It depends a bit on how you define useful. I myself think that action models are useful. Jeremy Shafer almost exclusively creates action models.

Thanks origami_8. I'm using a more restrictive definition of "practical". I consider Jeremy Shafer's models as toys. Now, with practical origami I guess I'm referring to the elaboration of "tools"; they are supposed to solve an everyday problem. Know what I mean?

What about staple-less paper binding? I have seen some semi-origami approaches to that...

So have I and that totally is practical origami; by the way, John Cunliffe's Paper Fastener AKA Corner Fastener is one of the best practical models I've seen. The question would be if one of the origamists that created a method for stapleless paper binding IS dedicated to creating different practical models, or if that was for example a one-time thing.

Think it was a one-time thing, sorry. Getting closer, though!

There was a challenge in the past on this forum for usefull origami. I remember a working garbagecan with a top that goes open when you push on a pedal. They also had the intention to turn all the models into a book. You might want to search the forum a bit.

Thanks Roodborst. I have a relatively good idea of the type of models created by the people involved with the challenge. They don't often create practical models :(.

What about this:

by Andrey Ermakov? Here is a link for the contest that was in: http://www.forum.loveorigami.info/viewt ... ?f=5&t=666

That's one of the models from the challenge roodborst was talking about. Andrey Ermakov is freaking talented! To my knowledge, aside from his two models for the challenge, he has concentrated his work on figurative origami and origami puzzles.

Agree with you! Did you look at the contest? Lots of good practical and semi practical designs there
