eGami: Where Are You Hiding?

I have seen mention in both academic journals and other publications of a program called "eGami." It is described as "... a computer software application that simulates the sequential folding of flat origami models in real time, using an intuitive interface designed to suggest the experience of folding an actual piece of physical paper. "

Excellent, just what I need to get two sketchbooks full of origami models from hundreds of somewhat cryptically drawn sequences I can understand to (one hopes) a software approach so others can have fun with it, too. Unfortunately, after doing some rigorous searching on the web, I can find no evidence of eGami software I can download, purchase, beta-test, write a compelling but not melodramatic letter asking to use, beg to try...you get the idea.

Has anyone found this software online? Is it available in any context? I'd very much like to see if I can use it to share my models with others. My thanks (in advance) to anyone who can shed some light on this!

Happy folding to all!

Google the term. I don't know anything about the software.

A short search took me to https://www.tib.eu/en/search/id/BLCP%3A ... pace%5D=tn where appatently you can buy it.

In Robert Lang's page there is mention of a software called Origami Simulator that does what you need, check: http://www.langorigami.com/article/origami-simulation

Brimstone:

1) I appreciate your fats response, but the link to which you called my attention is more a list of conference proceedings, as well as links to similar topical papers, than anything else. No where on the site did I see an actual link to eGami. Perhaps you saw something I missed? Perhaps I saw something you missed? These things happen...

2) The langorigami link does indeed take you to a software application that hones in on what I really need, but it looks like it is quite dated, not receiving much (if anything) in the way of updates, I'm uncertain if it works on a Windows platform, and mentions nothing about eGami.

Still, I appreciate your help, and making me aware of other resources out there!

Could it be that "eGami" is not an actual software but a short form for "electronic Origami", used in the title of a scientific paper from J. Fastag?

Unfortunately, a summary of the paper is missing, so it's not clear if it's about a concrete software or virtual paperfoldering in general, giving also an overview of diagramming software.

Your sources seem to hint, that eGami is indeed a software tool. Maybe eGami is still in development or not (yet) intended for public use.

Reading the paper may give further hints, but of course it's not for free. Or you get in contact with Jack Fastag or Robert J. Lang.

Reaching out to Dr. Lang--what an excellent idea. I feel somewhat embarrassed I didn't think to do so. Still, I would have to pose this same question: Barring not having his email address, what would be the best venue for posting my question about eGami that he would be likely to notice?

I don't use Twitter, but if you or anyone else had suggestions for posting a message (directly or otherwise) where he might be most likely to see it, I'd be grateful.

And Dr. Lang, if you're reading this, please feel free to jump in...andthank you for decades of inspiration as well as just plain fun!

You could try to send him your questions on eGami through the contact page on his website:

Doesn't it show on the righr hand side of the link

https://www.tib.eu/en/search/id/BLCP%3A ... pace%5D=tn

a text that reads "Pricing information" and under it a red button with the word "Purchase" on it?

That's probably the button to purchase the 12 pages long paper with the title "eGami: Virtual Paperfolding and Diagramming Software", not the software itself.

Foolish me...

Yesterday eveningI found a link to Dr. Lang--wherein you could post a message directly to him. I sent him a message about the elusive eGami application and he was both cordial and very prompt in his response.

He mentioned how dated the software is, and wondered if it would even runon current operating systems. (A scenario I'm certainly ready to test.) Dr. Lang mentioned if I search for both the keywords "origami" and "egami" in the same search sentence, I should be able to find a link.

I did. I didn't.

I invite others to see if they find something I missed. All I retrieved were the same journal papers, citations, and related commentary I'd seen before. If you have success, please let me know. If you don't, ditto: I that case I can always contact Dr. Lang again and politely ask if he has any other suggestions.

In the meantime, I complimented him on two of his models (a Lionfish and a Hermit Crab) in the circa 1990 book Origami Sea Life he and John Montroll co-published. A book well worth purchasing. (Especially when you need a respite from folding that Hornet or Echidna or tessellating surface for the nth time!)

Must it be told? Be bold, fold.

So, here's an update on eGami...a sort of good news/bad news scenario.

The good news: Mr. Brimstone--or if it is is Ms. Brimsone I figured I had a 50-50 shot of getting it right--was correct in the link s/he posted on finding downloadable files for the illusive eGami diagramming software created by Dr. Lang.

I direct you to the following site: http://www.langorigami.com/article/origami-simulation

That's the good news. The bad news (unless you have a way-back machine) is the code is about twenty years old, may cause your computer to crash, is designed to run in Mac Classic mode (honest), and cannot design tessellation patterns in which are coded elegant math which offers a proof for the Grand Unified Theory. Okay, I think the last part is only the end result of eGami working on Windows Vista. Which it doesn't. Shouldn't.

So, I feel bereft, diminished, disappointed, and hungry. (I skipped breakfast to review the Origami Forum this morning). It looks like InkScape (which is available at the very competitive price of free) is my go-to program for starting to diagram some of my models.

Phooey. 'Sorry about the harsh language.

Happy folding, everyone.

Charles

Hi Charles I'm sorry your search was not as succesful as you expected. I'm a he by the way.

Inkscape is great, let me recommend you a video that got me started with it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5bg61Yy5LXg

Then you can proceed to Jo Nakashima's series of tutorials for using Inkscape for origami diagramming: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8TMICjVvALc

Good luck and here at the forum we'll be eager to see your diagrams you can also find plenty of test folders for them.

Hi, Charles

This is pretty close to what you and the eOrigami creators envisioned to my understanding. It looks and sounds very promising (disclosure: I'm involved in this project):

* demo video: https://youtu.be/kI68Q1-8hhw
* actual site: https://d-origami.com

I wish more discussion with you on making something happen.

Cheers
