trying to get into modular origami

Hello,
I am just trying to get into modular origami, and my wife bought me a book for Christmas (a couple of Christmases ago) and I am just now trying to seriously have a go at it. But I am stuck right at the beginning.
I have tried to make two of the modules, and got stuck at each.
On the first it asks that you do a pleat fold in thirds. Without measuring the thirds out with a ruler and then marking the points on each side, how do you do it?
On the second, well, its difficult to explain... It asks you to make a crease, part way along the paper, up to an existing crease, but the angle isn't given and there's no way (that I can see) of guaranteeing the same angle every time. You need to make 30 modules exactly the same, but I don't see a way of making them all exactly the same. The author of the book has a website, but unfortunately there does not seem to be a help section
I'm hopeful that someone on here can get me past these beginning stumbling blocks.
Thanks!
Paul.
