Hello everyone,

I am an animated film director. I'm working on a personal 3D short film in an origami style.
I have a lot of rocks to do but I cannot find how to achieve them.

I searched a lot on the internet for references but nothing really convinced me. I do not want a crumpled paper ball (it's not origami) or I found very simple shapes (like an origami box as a rock).

I wanted to know if you would have references of cool origami rocks, or maybe if you could make one to help me. That would be awesome !!
I do not need the pattern, just the final look. ( want something shape like that, small or big rocks : https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ ... 012%29.jpg

Regards,

Gilles

I'm not aware of any "serious" origami rocks; however, you could achieve striations by manipulating pleats in paper. A search for "origami corrugations" might be a good place to start. You could also look into Tomohiro Tachi's work and try to model based on that. (I don't know much of anything about how computer animation works, so my suggestions might not be as relevant as I intend.)

Creating a rock is a double-edged sword: on one hand, anything can look natural; but actually making it look natural is a challenge. As I said, though, corrugations would likely go a long way toward what you need.

EDIT: Here is an example of what I'm talking about.

Thank you very much Baltorigamist !

I didn't know such thing exists for origami. It's really impressive !
But it's kind of a very specific origami art. I asked people around and for them at first look it's not origami.

Even if, it's really cool, i won't use it for my short, because audience may think it's not an origami rock.

I don't necessary want a really complex structure. But with few angles like this vector rock : https://www.123rf.com/photo_51706935_st ... ation.html

Maybe it's possible to "convert" them into origami.

Best,

I don't know the intents behind your short, but you could educate your audience by showing "non-mainstream" origami techniques instead of letting them with a less-than-accurate image of the art. :)

(Topic-related, I'm afraid I can't help you though...)
