Non-Folders Reactions to Your Origami

What has your experience been with non-folders who see your origami? At my office, I have many models on my desk. Most people's reactions have been:

"Is that origami?"
"Did you fold that?"
"How long did it take you?"
"What's the biggest thing you've folded?"

I always answer their questions and offer to fold something for them. I also encourage them to try it themselves. They usually respond, "I could never do that!" to which I answer "Anyone can fold origami!" So far I've converted two people to origamians :)

Anyone have similar experiences?

well, when they see my origami, they will ask how did you fold or was it hard :)

To prevent my models from being accidentally damaged by the cleaning lady or thrown away by my wife, I bring them to office and display them on my table.

Good feedback:
  • * Wow!
    * You can sell these!
Annoying feedback:
  • * Geez, somebody has wayyyyy too much time on their hands.
    * 2 hours? to fold THAT? I'd rather play badminton or something.

I bought my Bahamut (the one I designed) to school once. This was what one of my friends said:
"Holy %$#@ how the *&!? did you do that?? Mother *&^%*()&&@#&*$*!!! How long did you take to make that?? This is *&^%$# cool!!! You are damn pro wei!!"

Here's my favourite:
" Mother *&%^$$@)#(!&*$^*!!! You got so much free time ahh??!! Get away from me you origami-folding demon!!! %^$*&$*@)!*$&$@!

Here's what one of the teachers said:
Teacher: Boy! Put that toy away, otherwise I'll confiscate it!
Me: But it's made of paper!
Teacher: Oh. Then just put it away. It looks like a toy.

Well.. if you want to p*ss off your teacher, let her confiscate it.
Then create a new one exactly the same as the one she confiscated.

Then sounds like a complete waste of time. And I doubt that it'll piss the teacher off at all. She'll just have a large collection of paper knick-knacks by the end of the year.

"Wow, that is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen!" (One of my current professors, when I was folding during her lecture).

"That's funny"

"Too much time on your hands" x 10 (Wow, clever pun!)

"Cool!"

"What's the coolest thing you've ever made?"

"What's the biggest thing you've ever made?" x 5

"Can you make pornigami?"

"Can you make a life-size Statue of Liberty?"

"Awesome!" x 4

The main deal with folding during class is the noise it causes. Trick is to fold in a way that doesn't make noise. This means slow and deliberate folds, no crispy paper, etc. Also, best bet is to do mindless things, like tessellations, that way you can still pay attention.

I fold during my most interesting lecture, and it's not that I'm not paying attention, just gives me something to do with my hands.

I only fold at home. If I folded during class, my grades will flounder, I'll never graduate, I'll never get a job, and I'll have to starve on the streets holding a sign that says "Will fold for bread crumbs".

I'd be impressed if it said "will fold bread crumbs" and if you actually could do it. ;)

"What is that?"
"Is that a rabbit, oh sorry, it's a Santa!"
"Cool....You're weird"
"But why?"
"Oh, how big was the paper?"

The most common one "Is that macrami?"
Also "Are you busy with that funny paper thing again?"

Ah, another popular one: "Is that one piece of paper?"

mainly"oooh cool!" or "wow!! you're so creative! how did you do that?"
and I'm like "one square/rectangle, no cuts, no glue.. you sure you wanna know??"
I gave money flower to few people and it's real pain to teach each of them how to read the diagrams.
So far I have converted zero :(

the two that I get most are
"these are really without cuts?"
and
"I could never do it, I don't have the patience for stuff like that"
actually I never got any bad ones...
