Color changes on the scales? They are close to the edge so maybe. Maybe using something similar to pierrot the clown model in the last tv championship. I don't know about the shoulders though.

Stripes or spots would take an enormous amount of paper to achieve-I don't think that would be feasible. I was thinking more along the lines of color changes on the claws, tail, or head.

Heh, I was actually kind of being sarcastic. A spotted Ryuzin would look.... ridiculous.

But for the sake of the possibility...

Kamiya tends to not use color-change very much though. But I'm actually surpised he folds it out of white paper every time. Maybe the kind of paper he likes doesn't come in any other color, heh. I think it'd be sweet if it was a greenish/darker color.

That's a very good point-it may be very true, especially since the paper must be so big. Although he could use ink to dye it. Maybe one reason he doesn't use color changes very often is again because of his preferred paper-handmade paper must be laminated to another color sheet in order to get different colors on either side, making it thicker (and it is a troublesome process, anyway). Ryujin probably looks better without the color changes, though-since it is so complex, having only 2 colors might look awkward.

I think it looks better without color change :)

Sorry to bump this very old topic, but I wanted to know if anyone knows any websites in which one can see the earlier versions of ryu zin.

Thanks

Well, has everyone here seen Robert Lang's model "snack time?" Out of a single uncut square of paper, he has a praying mantis eating another praying mantis. I think that SK should make the ryu zin 4.0 like that :D. two ryu zins fighting each other :D shame it would be almost impossible.....

Well, for anyone who has not seen the picture of Snack Time, here is one:

Why not? If there is anyone that could do it, it would be Kamiya. Why not shake the origami world with another amazing design?

I can see kamiya can't be bothered to do super-complex designs recently. Ever since his breakthrough at 2005, he has been creating simpler pieces (simpler in kamiya standards)

This does seem to be the case if you look through his galleries year by year.

I don't know where you're getting the idea that Satoshi Kamiya's origami is less complex than it was-- on the contrary, I think it's gotten more so. It's just not so obvious... Yes, the Ancient Dragon and Ryuzin appear very complex; but structurally they're not so complex. Some of his more recent creations, such as R. Dorothy and the Leafy Sea Dragon, look fiendishly hard to design, and I suspect use much more sophisticated structures.
