Hi All,

it's my absolute pleasure to tell you about the second Valentine's Day model I'm presenting this year. Last week it was the "Lovers Ring" by Francis Ow ( http://www.happyfolding.com/instructions-ow-lovers_ring ), which even beginners should be able to fold in just a few minutes.
This week, in contrast, it's all about a somewhat more advanced model. Stacy Mannes designed a super-cute standing heart, which is holding a smaller heart in its hands. He calls it "Will you be my Valentine?". The standing heart requires one square, and the small heart another, smaller square. But of course you can also fold something different that the standing heart should hold!

And here are the details:

PDF diagrams by Stacy Mannes: http://www.happyfolding.com/diagrams
Video on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jEJnIQOOGdk
Image on happyfolding: http://www.happyfolding.com/gallery-man ... _valentine
Video page on happyfolding: http://www.happyfolding.com/instruction ... _valentine

Hope you enjoy!

Wish A model

Post by easysid »

good job with "Will you be my valentine" ... I made it with help of diagrams, they were really clear. But, I found the model to be more difficult than it looks :P .. lots of creases n stuff ....

Btw, my model request, like some others in previous posts:

1) Mooser's Train : CP is in Origami Design Secrets . There's also a thread on this forum, but I don't know yet how to fold from a CP.

2) Lion by David Brill : Diagrams in Brilliant Origami

sara, i've studied your wise words on asking for permission to use an origami author's work for personal purposes. i do agree in thinking that there should be an ethical code beside all copyrights in dealing with other artist's oeuvre.
thank you for sharing your opinion!

This time round: a triangular box by Hans-Werner Guth. Thanks Hans-Werner for another great, simple model, and for your permission to demonstrate my take on how to fold the model. (I've added subtitles in English and German.)

Video on happyfolding: http://www.happyfolding.com/instruction ... ngular_box
Video on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ce8ecemfCFY

Note that you can easily fold this model from a rectangle, rather than a square. Start with the long size lying horizontally when doing the cupboard fold (first step) and then proceed as before. Or blintz the paper before folding to get different patterns on the finished box. Also see: http://picasaweb.google.com/hwguth
Klaus-Dieter Ennen also drew diagrams (different folding sequence, though), which you may want to check out: http://origamist.de/pdf/17/dreiecks-sch ... w.guth.pdf

AND:

As you may know, I've started writing a guide to creating videos. In each issue of TheFold (the online magazine published by OrigamiUSA) one further article will be published. In the current (third) issue of TheFold the article is all around preparing for the record. Read it here: http://www.origami-usa.org/thefold003_v ... d_insights
The two previous articles were an overview (http://www.origami-usa.org/thefold001_v ... tion_guide) and my take on how and why to ask for permission (http://www.origami-usa.org/thefold001_v ... tion_guide).
By the way, these articles are accessible to everyone. Some other articles of TheFold are open to OrigamiUSA members only, but you can see the titles of those articles, too. It might tempt you to finally join, if you haven't so far. :)

Happy folding,

Hi everyone,

Just a quick one letting you know my video for this month is up.
In June 2009 I made a video on how to fold Shuzo Fujimoto's tessellation "Clover Folding". Since then I've had many many people ask me how to fold more stages. I'd thought it'd be a nice (and not too hard) exercise to extend the principle, but I guess I misjudged how hard this is for at least some. So I've made a video that shows how to fold more stages.

Video on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=474PmBXekK8
Video on Happyfolding: http://www.happyfolding.com/instruction ... ore_stages
Image of 7-stage and 11-stage fold: http://www.happyfolding.com/gallery-fuj ... er_folding

And, of course, thanks again to Shuzo Fujimoto for a model very dear to my heart, and his permission to present it.

With that I wish you all a Happy Easter!

I hadn't read through all 12 pages of this thread, sorry if I am re-requesting something, but how about David Brill's Seated Cat?

...Just happened to read your own post on your site about the Seated Cat regarding whether you would ever do a video on it (leaning towards no it seemed). Oh well, you did say "wish" right? :)

It'd probably be really hard to make a tutorial for, but I really like Kade Chan's Legend Wolf. The CP can be found here:

I'm happy to let you know about the newest instructional video I've prepared. This time round I had the pleasure of introducing the Begonia Leaf designed by Peter Engel. It's diagrammed in Peter Engel's new book "Origami Odyssey". Here's some extra data on the book: http://www.happyfolding.com/book-engel-origami_odyssey
Robert Lang also wrote a very complimentary review of the book for OrigamiUSA's TheFold, which is available at http://www.origami-usa.org/thefold004_lang_odyssey

My special thanks go to Peter Engel for a great, new book, as well as his permission to make a video on one of the models to feature his book. Indeed, this was extra special, because he contacted me, rather than me contacting him, and gave me the unique opportunity of having a sneak peek at the book. The book is going to be available next month (i.e. July 2011), so this video is also a sneak peek for you! And of course you can already preorder it now.

Links:

Video on Happyfolding: http://www.happyfolding.com/instruction ... gonia_leaf
Video on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c4PD2lPiSiQ

I also have the pleasure of announcing three articles in OrigamiUSA's the fold, which I wrote or edited.

1. Recording the Video - What to Watch out For
This is the next article in my video creation guide, and I go into which points to watch out for while recording the video. This will hopefully help you both enhance the quality of videos you may want to produce, as well as cut down on the editing time required after recording.
Read it at http://www.origami-usa.org/thefold004_video_recording

2. Paper Review: The Making of Printer Paper
Ilan Garibi had the unique opportunity of visiting Paper Mill Hadera close to his home town in Israel. In this article he shares his experience, explaining the different steps that are required to produce printer paper, as well as some quality assurance testing thereafter.
Read it at http://www.happyfolding.com/paper-makin ... nter_paper or http://www.origami-usa.org/thefold004_p ... nter_paper

3. Paper Review #4:
Ilan Garibi and Gadi Vishne reviewed printer paper this time round. If you are a BOS member, you may have already read this article in the most recent BOS issue. I edited the online version a bit, but the essence of the article is the same.
Read it at http://www.happyfolding.com/paper-review_printer_paper or http://www.origami-usa.org/thefold004_p ... nter_paper
You can also see an overview of all thus far published paper reviews at http://www.happyfolding.com/paper-reviews_introduction

As a side note, there's another paper review article in OrigamiUSA's TheFold. Robert Lang compared Origamido paper with paper by Paper Circle. He did this comparison on the example of a spider design of his to test how well suited especially the newcomer from Paper Circle was for complex folding. Curious?
While the articles I mentioned above are open access, this article is available to OrigamiUSA members only. If you're logged in to the website, you can read it here: http://www.origami-usa.org/thefold004_lang_paper
If you are a member, but don't have an account yet, check this page: http://www.origami-usa.org/faq_webaccounts or directly register at http://www.origami-usa.org/user/register
And if you want to read this article, as well as many other fantastic ones published in TheFold, perhaps that's the final decider for you to join OrigamiUSA. :) http://www.origami-usa.org/joinus

Also, much effort goes into all of these articles. If you read them and like them, do comment (on Happyfolding) or send the authors an email. I'm sure they'll appreciate the feedback. :)

It's on my tentative list, actually. We'll see. :)

Sorry, I won't be doing any tutorial on models by Satoshi Kamiya. This is his wish and I respect it.

Hm, I'll put it on my list of models to consider. I do have the book Papirolandia 1, so at least that's settled. I haven't been in touch with Fernando Gilgado yet regarding permission, though.

I kind of figured. Actually, another origami-ist is going to give me a hand with it, so we'll see how it goes.

Hi everyone,

it's with great pleasure that I can today announce two things you might be interested in.

1. Wobbling Wall of Nine Cubes Video
Heinz Strobl graciously gave me permission to demonstrate how to fold his wobbling wall of nine cubes. He also again taught me in person how to get the best results, giving some tips and tricks - which I also tried to communicate in the video. I hope you enjoy it - and you may also want to again admire Heinz's other fabulous work, e.g. on his website http://www.knotology.eu/

Image: http://www.happyfolding.com/gallery-str ... nine_cubes
Video on Happyfolding: http://www.happyfolding.com/instruction ... nine_cubes
Video on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dHTqRqg_LXo

Thank you, Heinz!

2. Article on how to publicize origami books online
I also wrote an article on some ideas for publicizing origami books online. I hope this will help authors promote their books further, and thus lead to more sales. But it also gives some suggestions how each and every one of us can support the creators - not just by buying the book.
You can read it at OrigamiUSA's TheFold: http://www.origami-usa.org/thefold005_p ... oks_online
And a big thank you to all authors and creators for all the work they put into publishing books!

Hope you enjoy these two contributions, and happy folding,

-- Sara
